    Default Runaways #28 *SPOILERS*

No thread? Don't tell me you guys forgot about this book already. Though I don't remember what happened previous in this book to well I managed to enjoy the issue. I'm hoping at somepoint in this arc that Karolina and Molly kick that little girl's husband ass. Being a lazy pedo should be reason enough. The cliffhanger didn't sit well with me. Hopefully Gert's death won't be undone.

It's a shock. Whedon's Runaways is even more disjointed and dull than his Astonishing X-Men. It's a real shame, as I used to like Runaways. The delays don't help, given nothing memorable happens from issue to issue. So by the time the next one comes out, you can barely recall what happened in the last one. Is there anyway that Brian K. Vaughan can come back after Whedon's 6 issues are done? That would make me a happy Beastie.

Only two moments were great, BKV level writing.

"Oh my god, he makes you do CHORES?!" was the first token-cute line from Whedon writing Molly that wasn't forced and predictable; it struck me as super-lol.

The second was the Minoru reveal, I enjoyed that a lot. It makes sense given BKV implied that the Staff of One was a big mystical object, not an obscure one, when Bo (of Pusher Man) knew the phrase and said it in a sarcastic way.

Everything else was ridiculous. Too many new characters thrown at us for a one-time run on a book currently set 100 years in the past, too many references and obscure things we're supposed to memorize and know, and just pure, pure, pure laxative laced bullshit.

Ryan draws Karolina nice in that she looks like one of those skinny twins on top model.

It's just 22 pages of almost constant talking. And not even interesting talking.

Try to read it in the store if possible. Because it's not even really worth being summarized.

I liked it but christ delays are absoulutely killing this book. I could barely remember how they got there, and who the other kids were.

Man, I like the stuff involving Nico, but everything else in this arc is sooo lame. This is turning into a huge screw-up For Whedon. Good thing he's only doing this arc. Hopefully Moore will make everything better.

I'm a huge Whedon fan, but I dunno...The dialogue feels very contrived. It's as if each talk bubble is striving to be more clever than the last. All the pop culture references and the cutesy misunderstandings just feel unnatural, and it really pulls me out.

Plus the art really bothers me. It seems unrefined, as if the anatomy of the faces are somehow off. I dunno, it's hard to explain. All I know is that something feels off to me.

Then, of course, there's the insane delays, as most of you have mentioned.

I enjoy the arc (and the issue) and I love Whedon, but Christ if I won't be glad when he's gone and the book can (hopefully!) move back to a more normal schedule.
    Praise be to Nero's Neptune,
    The Titanic sails at dawn,
    And everybody's shouting,
    "Which Side Are You On?"

And Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot,
    Fighting in the captain's tower,
While calypso singers laugh at them,
    And fishermen hold flowers.
Between the windows of the sea,
    Where lovely mermaids flow,
And nobody has to think too much,
    About Desolation Row.

The delays did hurt some. There's alot of new characters to keep track of and long delays don't help to keep things straight.

Still, it was an ok issue despite that I hate time travel and all the inconsistencies that come with it.

I wonder about Nico sending Vic off with the redhead he's obviously crushing on. Maybe she wants their relationship to end. She's hinted that she feels she can be co-depenent sometimes and may be trying to end things indirectly so she can be on her own.

All the dialogue has actually got me curious as to how much of the 1800's slang is actual 1800's slang, how much is 1800's slang being used incorrectly, and how much is stuff Whedon just pulled out of his ass.

But then I've got nothing better to do with my time.

I'm enjoying this (except for the delays), but it seems like Joss made the mistake of sending everyone back to a time no-one but me cares about. I happen to love this time period, and just about anything set in it. So I'm a sucker for this.

LAME! When does the next team start? This book sucks under Whedon.
