Please forgive me if there's already a thread on this topic.
Tonight's episode (9/23/07) was extremely uneven. Of course that's been the case with most episodes in the past ten years.
The opening sequence was a thing of beauty, featuring lots of references to the movie. The first act was completely silly and nonsensical; Homer behaved like a second-rate Peter Griffin. However, the creators did make use of some of the innovative cinema-esque animation techniques from the movie, especially in the scenes with planes taking off or landing. The second act was hilarious, especially the Colbert character's explanation that he was a life coach rather than a shrink, psychologist or motivational speaker, and the scene where Homer hid in the ball bin. After that the episode kind of petered out.
I wonder what university the Colbert character attended that wasn't Duke or Vanderbilt. I was afraid he was going to mention my current alma mater.
Overall, this episode had scattered flashes of brilliance, but did not hang together very well -- in short, it was like most other recent Simpsons episodes.
