    Default Children's Comics

So I was wondering since we have comics, there should be kid comics to accompany their books. I was thinking this since my daughter loves flipping through comics and pretending to read them.

So I'm planning on writing a comic based on a character my daughter made up and making a story with a moral to it. Maybe I could even have it become a series of issues instead of condensing the story into one issue, but I don't know if that is a good idea considering a child's attention span.

Well, if you're aiming at kids who're just learning how to read, then I wouldn't suggest anything long or complicated. Short, fun stories are what get kids into reading books, so the same should be true for comics. If you're aiming at an older demographic, say grade school level, serial format storytelling wouldn't hurt. One of the most popular comics among kids is Bone, which is a proverbial epic.

I´m actually working on a project on my spare time directed to my nieces (7 and 8 years old).
I´m just tired of the fairy/princess/magic/mermaid/witch stuff they feed little girls, how about something a bit more grounded on reality for a change?

Now of course we don´t wanna traumatize them just yet with the harsh reality but IMHO something fun, yet subconsciently educational would be a nice change of pace.

Yeah I came across this idea when I read my daughter Percival the Plain Caterpillar. I didn't like the message that it's not good to be plain. Somehow kid's books nowadays aren't what they used to be. I have fairy, mermaid books for Cassie, but they are books about myths. So it's basically educational stories about other people's myths and their "background", nothing too fantasy despite the subject matter.

I just met a guy at DragonCon that seems to be doing alright for himself writing kid's comics. They're very cute.

Andy's OWLY books are a must read for anyone between the ages of 3 and 300. :)

There's a HUGE sub-strata of all-ages creators doing wonderful stuff that's suitable for kids right now. Here's a short list:

    Jim Gownley - AMELIA RULES
    Scott Sava - DREAMLAND CHRONICLES
    John Gallagher - BUZZ BOY
Dwight MacPherson - SURREAL ADVENTURES OF EDGAR ALLEN POO
    Otis Frampton - ODDLY NORMAL

Not to mention a few books I write. ;)

And the Lerner Books Graphic Myths & Legends series (aimed at pre-teens). One of my own contributions, Hercules: The Twelve Labors, just came out in softcover and is in this month's Previews.

You can't beat any of the Disney comics from Gemstone. Solid artwork, brilliant writing and its characters she'll know, so that's a plus. Probably the best all ages comics on the market.

You can't also beat the classics of Tintin and Asterix.
    Something a bit more modern:
    - Owly
    - Bone
    - Corgi by Michael Slade
    - some of the Johnny DC comics, like old issues of the Powerpuff Girls
    - Lions, Tigers and Bears
    - Betty & Veronica
    - Akiko
    - anything by Jonah Sfar
    - Moomin

    Hope that gets you started
