I agree. I think this makes things much more interesting than just Fairy Tail vs. Sabretooth with Raven Tail grudge on the side. The other guilds, particularly Mermaid Heel and Quartro, could have been fodder guilds, but the fact that they have established, skilled members makes the whole thing seem like more of a competition.

In fact, all of the participants seem to have at least one major wildcard. There's even that guy in the bunny suit that nobody knows what the fuck he does.

Pet peeve here. This is not an example of lazy writing. Power relationships are an object of a story. That Kagura can one shot the 13th spirit means that she can one shot the 13th spirit, nothing more, nothing less. That we do not know the full implications of their relative power levels after one showing is well within the writer's perogative and not the reader's right.

This is like complaining that Aragorn momentarily fending off some of the Nine is lazy writing because we had never seen them attack anything other than hobbits and civilians by then.

You don't have to meander along the old wheel of "Hype Character A's tech is chapter X, now super Hype Character B by having him beat the tech in Chapter Y." New characters should be allowed to both show their stuff for the first time, showing equal hype, and one of them may end up just being better than the other. IMO, this should happen *more* often in manga. The only time I think pre-establishement is really necessary is to avoid deus ex machina's for crucial moments. As it stands, both Yukino's reveal of possessing the 13th gate and Kagura possessing a sword technique so strong she shouldn't draw her sword completely have been chekhov-gunned so that they can be brought into a future battle or whatever without seeming like ideas pulled out of nowhere.

And here I thought that you weren't going to have any expectations on this series.

I mean, yeah it's very possible that Kagura and Erza will face off in one way or another. But it might also not happen. Or it'll be a draw. Either way it'll probably be a good fight. There's no real reason to just assume that they're going to to fight and that it's going to suck no matter what.

Instead, let's focus on the things that's actually been set up here. Sabertooth has now suffered a total shutdown just like Fairy Tail did on the first day. How will their reaction differ from FT's and what actions will they take to make sure that it won't happen again? And the matter that the actual big bads here now have further options to pick from to open their gate of doom. How will that change things?

It's nice to see a powerful enemy that has a balanced and reasonable personality.

There's no real reason to just assume that they're going to to fight

I think they'll probably fight because they're both girls, powerful, and use swords.

Kinda like how I'd expect dragon slayers to end up in battle one way or another.

Blue Pegasus: ...why does Erza insist that Ichiya is a great mage? Look at those stats! They're the worse of the bunch! The other three night guys are well-rounded.

Well, we already knew he's an idiot with crap physique. That torpedoes four out of five stats right there. (His fifth stat is "shininess", heh.)

Mermaid Heel: ...wow. Kagura's overall stats are actually better than Erza's. The other three shown are kind of low though.

Kagura's high 5th stat is just "coolness". OTOH, her attack power should arguably be higher, considering what she just did with a sheath.

hey finally caught up with Fairy Tail. I like this arc so far.

Anyway as I was reading through the x791 arc and early tournament do you think the hosts kind of rigged everything against the lesser Fairy Tail members to make them last, kind of just to troll them. It would make sense to me because while Max and those guys couldn't hope to compete against any of the 6 other guilds in there right now last seems extreme. It occurred to me when I saw the page about having the shooting tournament when Bisque wasn't there etc and how hands on the host guys already are in fixing things up it could totally have happened.
