So did we ever figure out who the kind in chapter 234 was? Is it a young Zeref?

When in doubt about a character, always assume that it's Jellal. Especially if it doesn't make sense for it to be Jellal.
More seriously, we still don't know. He was apparently important enough to get the chapter title though.
Suffering is a fact of life. You survive if you find a reason to endure it.
Interesting chapter.
I like that Zeref isn't the typical kind of big bad and that he at one point actually decided that being a bad guy was wrong.
I quite liked the Ultear/Meredy scene. It was different, sweet and tragic. Looking forward to further developments with these two.So it isn't enough that he knows that he must care, because he seems to be perfectly aware of it all and one would assume that be enough. I wonder if there's something that's just stopping him from caring all-together.
This chapter.... was no.
Zeref. Cut it out. Seriously, knock it off.
What the heck kinda nonsense are you spouting? Rhetorical. Rhetorical! Oh Dear God RHETORICAL!!!
I was hoping he'd be so...... and then this.....
Mashima.... it hurts...... don't do this to me man.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No! It's.... it's not to late... this.... this can still turn around! It can!
Just stop saying "Value of Life.". That's all he's got to do..... stop talking...... stop talking about things that make him look lame!
Mashima fix him! Fix it!!!
He can still be awesome..... just stop.... turn around.. and go the other way.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. - John 3:16
So... how exactly did GH made him stop caring about life?

You know, if acnologia turns out to be some lame endless ripoff it means Mashima run out of creativity and is just reusing his previous ideas.

Word from spoiler town is that Acnologia is

indeed the black dragon Gildartz was talking about. And it apparently has some kind of vaguely moth-ish draconic design. So, Battra Dragon!

Gildarts you womanizer, you...
Also Acnologia looks pretty cool. I don't envy FY rigth now. They are about to be stomped.
But man, Cana lost the glitter already? what was the point of it then? It has no connection to anything. It's like it was there to give BN some motivation beyond "rawr evil"

damn gildarts, you a player
Also I kinda feel that Gildartz days are numbered.
I suspect within the next three or four chapters he will attempt to do his best Gale Glory impression, and I mean that in the most heartbreaking way possible
"I checked the abandoned warehouse, only to find it abandoned..."
That's an interesting thought.
As for the chapter, I think the most interesting part of it was the revalation of Gildartz and Cana's relation. Gildartz handled the situation quite well in the end. And the scene was quite heartfelt. I'm glad that that plot thread reached its conclusion. Also I enjoyed the comedy of the chapter.
There was also a good cliffhanger at the end. I'm interested in seeing what happens next now.
This Acnologia thing really looks a bit weird. I'm not so sure its a dragon. But then Fairy Tail does seem to have dragons with wildly different forms. Of all the dragons, it seems that only Igneel looks like the average dragon shape that we've come to know.

Sometimes you lose things which you don't expect losing. It doesn't make the hurt any less.
