Default Suicide Squad vol. II - by Giffen & Medina

Just read through this complete series. Giffen's usually a great source for fun books and this series falls right in line. Medina's art is unique and action-oriented ... I like it.

Did anything ever come of the subplots:

Who was masquerading as Sgt Rock & Bulldozer?

    Did Blackstarr ever return?

    Major Disaster's noted "multiple personalities"?

Amanda Waller's newfound daughter - reconciliation? family development?

Nothin' came of any of those subplots. I think they were building towards Nemesis being Rock, and The Wall's daughter getting in the game, but yeah... the book got canned pretty fast, so none of that went anywhere.

You know, I thought they hinted who it was at the end--but I can't remember.

    Dead.

    The Unknown Soldier, IIRC.

They killed her in the last issue of the series, didn't they?

Dude, I can't remember anymore. I haven't reread it since it ended, and that was what... five years ago?

im interested in the artist, any links to his work on this title?
Rogue and Bishop's daughter would be called Discharge, and she'd touch people and drain all or some of their bioelectrical energy out of them causing them to either die or fall unconscious. She could then use this energy to extend her own life, heal herself, enhance her physical abilities (speed, strength, stamina,) or discharge it as various energy beams.

Yeah. IIRC, Giffen did it because he didn't want anyone messing with his characters.

Which is an amazingly self serving attitude, given how he messed with Waller.

I think this happened right after the rape/murder of Sue Dibny (a character he developed a great deal in JLE) in Identity Crisis, so maybe...

No, no, that volume of Suicide Squad ended at least a year before Identity Crisis. It's odd to hear that Giffen had such an attitude about self-preservation for a character he created in a strike-out book like that, but he barely raised a fuss over D Didi slaughtering his old team.

    - Yeah, Havana (Waller's daughter) died in the last issue of the series.

In hindsight, that book was kind of a mess:

    - Spoiler's Dad was killed off and no one told Chuck Dixon.
    - Major Disaster's "multiple personality" thing was mainly because Giffen wrote his version of Major Disaster and not the other version that was out there since Underworld Unleashed. He threw in the multiple personality thing so that future writers could use whatever version of the character they wanted.
    - Giffen's version of Killer Frost also acted totally different.

Hmmm thanks for all the input, everyone.

    I'm not a DC regular ... I'm a 87.5% Marvel guy.

That said, I wasn't familiar with any of these characters. Naturally, I'd heard of some of them (Sgt Rock, Unknown Soldier, Deadshot, etc) but, knew nothing about them.

The concept, writing, and art were all fun but, the series came to a close too soon. It makes me want to check out the original series, though. I'm working on putting a run of that together, now ....

The original series (really the 2nd Ostrander series) was 1000000000% better.

Wow, so that series did serve a good purpose!

It was a series I wanted to love, but the stories were such a mess. Great art, but Giffen was clearly on some very bad meds when he wrote that series.
