IE: good plot device, but it woulda been nice to see a real live lesbian, too.

Moore could have been conventional and had say, a Labour party supporter or a black man in the role but he choose the character of a young lesbian because at that time, it was something that related to his personal life. Valerie is better written in a few pages than some characters have been in their entire histories.
Also remember that the Valerie chapter originally appeared in Warrior when V For Vendetta only had 6/7 pages an issue. The reason it appears episodic is because it is.

Exactly. If you've ever read the Celluloid Closet (which is about movies, but it certainly applies to literature and comics too), it basically shows examples from the beginning of film where queers in movies are basically accepted if they're not directly interactive and/or don't make it through to the end. They have to be tragic and distant just so the public will allow them in.

"If you can't say anything good about someone, sit right here by me." - Alice Roosevelt Longworth, on manners
"It's not whether you win or lose, it's whether I win or lose." - Peter David, on life
The constant ass kissing of Alan Moore in comics is grating, no matter what his achievements. I imagine his fans like Bjork or Radiohead fans sitting in a room, finishing each others sentences and all nodding in agreement at everything he does and every opinion they have. Dull and annoying drones.

Thus do I write the first chapter of my new scripture. And the first verse is "Let it all burn."
PHOENIX INVICTUS!
Very intese people are fans of Bjork, Radiohead, and Tori Amos, even.
They've done some amazing things, sure, but to actively seek to apply their acheivements across the board as being the basis of any progress and give them unbelieveable amounts of importance seem to be the norm when speaking in terms of their fans.
