I suggest picking up #1 for this title called "Fantastic Four". The one done by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Start there and work your way up the Marvel Age and in no time at all, you'll be caught up.

Thanks, david, I'm sure he'll put that to good use.
Best advice I'd give, other than ordering you to buy Runaways and Thing, is to pay attention to those Civil War tie-ins. Pick up a good range, and see what you like, and stick with those books after the story's done.
And if you have any history questions, feel free to ask around here. We're all nerds who know way too much about this stuff.
"If you can't say anything good about someone, sit right here by me." - Alice Roosevelt Longworth, on manners
"It's not whether you win or lose, it's whether I win or lose." - Peter David, on life
If you like X-Men, then IMO, I'd say "Astonishing", and "New X-Men" if you'd like to read about the next generation of X. Runaways is another fave. And I'm quite liking "Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane" (two Mini series of four issues each runs up to the beginning of this series).
I've heard "X-Factor" is good, as is "Young Avengers". I keep meaning to look into that title. As there's a YA/Runaways cross over in this Summer's "Civil War" event, I can have a taste of the title there. That'll make the decision weather or not I pick up YA later.
PULLS: Morning Glories . X-23 . Kick-Ass/Hit-Girl . Ultimate Spidy . Runaways . Usagi Yojimbo
I'd recommend the following:
Moon Knight: It just started and I already love it. Excellent writing and fantastic art.
Captain America: Brubaker has made me like Captain America for the first time. This is one of the best comics out there.
Daredevil: Brubaker part II. Like Captain America, Brubaker has made Daredevil one of the best comics on the market. Great stuff.
Ultimate Spider-Man: I didn't really love the last story arc, but this title has consistently been one of the most entertaining titles each and every month.
Ultimate FF: The art is absolutely gorgeous. The storyline has been much better than the regular FF title.
X-Factor: The art is hit or miss and the pace is slow. But, if you are interested in a comic that has some of the best character studies then this is your title. Very interesting read.
Astonishing X-Men: This is how the X-Men are supposed to be written. Fantastic story and great art.
Uncanny X-Men: Once Brubaker takes over this title I'm positive it will once again be a great read. I haven't been able to say that about this title in a long time.
I'm sorry if this is in the wrong forum... But I want to get back into Marvel comics, specifically X-Men. I have a bunch of old ones from the 80s and early 90s, so I know of many characters, arcs, etc. However, I feel I've missed out these last 12 years or so since I last bought a Marvel comic.
And I'll admit: I'm intimidated by the different kinds of X-Men comics out there, I just don't know where to begin. I want something mature yet well-written, something beautiful to stare at yet has substance. Where should I begin (title, issue, etc.), and where can I find past issues?
Also, I know Marvel did this with Spiderman, but is there an X-Men series that basically retells the story (but a good retelling)? And is there a definitive website to check out that has in-depth and updated bios, timelines and more?
Thanks so much. I appreciate any and all help.
If your looking for anything in Marvel thats good look at Punisher Max and Planet Hulk in Hulk. Both are either new books or new storylines.
If its X-men you want go for Wolverine: Origins and Astonishing X-men. Astonishing has 2 trades and just started its 2nd season and Wolverine: Origins is only on issue 2.
Uncanny X-men, X-men, X-Calibur and Wolverine all have lots of history to them. Just start with Origins and Astonishing and add from there.
After them I heard Cable/Deadpool is a good read.
If you pick up Captain America, you'll understand why it's being hailed as the best run in the history of the series. It's definitely the best thing Marvel is putting out.
I buy alot of stuff currently, comics usually get down to the end of the list of things I need to get. Anyway, I have $150 coming to me independently of my income, and I'd like to spend it all on any marvel trades people suggest. So anything you could suggest (or want to discuss), for any reason, from essentials to trades to get me caught up to current runs, would be killer.
