This should help. I knew very little about Civil War but after reading this I pretty much understand what's going on. Take out the "uk" bit in the link if it isn't working, it just redirect me to this link coz I'm in the UK.
New Avengers really is probably a pretty good starting point for a new reader...
however, I can't let these types of threads pass without noting that Brubaker's runs on Captain America and Daredevil are my top two comics EVERY SINGLE MONTH.
No one responds to street art anymore.
People tend to respond to things like loaded guns in their faces.
That and celebrity spokesmodels.
Books like Captain America are pretty much universally praised by everyone, so that's what I'd check out. New Avengers has been a mixed bag, as are the X-Men and Spider-Man books. Daredevil also seems to be a big hit with everyone.
Daredevil..........
once u read it, there is no turning back.
Schmakt's recommendations get seconded by me.Originally Posted by Schmakt
THING is also a fun read, and YOUNG AVENGERS has be consistantly good.
Id recommend Runaways and Young Avengers to a new fan as they are pretty accesible to new readers.
Also, Astonishing X-men if you like the X-men. And even if u didn't like X-men Id suggest it anyway. Best X title out at the moment and not to continuity heavy.
They all have nothing to do with Civil War but are great reads.
Nextwave and Young Avengers are great...plus because theyre relativley new books...should only take you 20 mins of internet reading to know EVERYTHING.
I'd start at Marvel Comics #1 and go from there!
Good luck!
I'm going to try to do a borad, all-inclusive list of what's good about Marvel, taken from a lot of past posts. Just for you, buddy:
Civil War is a brilliant place to start.
Young Avengers is a superb super-hero book with great dialogue and characterization, written by the guy who writes The O.C.
Daredevil is a gritty, dark, noir epic. You need to be buying this book.
Captain America, maybe Marvel's best book, is a perfectly-executed mix of super-hero, espionage, and just plain shock.
The Utimates 2 is a beautifully handled politically-charged action-oriented thriller.
Astonishing X-Men is the most accessible mutant book currently, unless you want something a little less super-hero and a little more noir, in which case I would go with X-Factor.
Thing is self-conciously old-school comic book fun.
She-Hulk is self-conciously clever Marvel Comics fun.
Runaways has perhaps the most likable cast of characters in the history of the world, with fun plots and Marvel Universe interaction.
Marvel Team-Up is occasionally brilliant, always entertaining, and completely fun.
Nextwave is an insane book about pirate super-heroes as written by a guy who hates super-heroes.
New Avengers has the big guns, and makes for good popcorn entertainment. Don't buy this in favor of the others, though.
That about covers it, currently. There's other promising books, like Moon Knight or Brubaker's Uncanny X-Men run coming up, but damn that is a freaking spectacular pull list right there. Trust me, I have great taste.:D
Seriously, though, there's the rundown, pick what you like.

Young Avengers-young new team with shocking connections to some of Marvel's established characters, lots of superheroics and characters you can't help but care about
Daredevil-check out everything from Underboss to King of Hell's Kitchen(#26-50,56-60),the current stuff is great, you should read Murdock Papers(#76-81)beforehand
Incredible Hulk #92-current(#94)-Hulk has been betrayed by his closest friends, ends up on a planet where he is seen as a savior of sorts, his hatred for his "friends" is ever growing, you know !@#$ will hit the fan
Civil War-Just started and is very accessible.Try out Illuminati beforehand, adds to the reading experience.
Moon Knight-Has the same dark tone of DD with a more supernatural twist.Lots of potential.
Captain America-I started late with #11 but have been onboard since, wasn't lost at all in what has been the most human approach to Cap topped with great action and suspense, the art is something to brag about as well, new storyline starting soon so pick it up!
Ultimates 1 and 2-Modern take with a political twist on the Avengers(Cap,Thor,Iron Man,Hulk,Wasp,Giant-Man,Hawkeye,Scarlet,Quicksilver).One of the greatest comics to ever be written with cinematic action, superb characterization, and a very epic scope to it.
Ultimate F4-This is the F4 at their purest. The first arc #1-6 was a great new take on the origins of the team.Everything from #13 to now has been superb.#21 began Mark Millar's run which has been regarded as the book's best since it's inception.Frightful Four,Namor,Inhumans,Skrulls, and Dr Doom, what more could you ask for?
Wolverine Enemy of the State,Agent of SHIELD-You're an x-fan so you will love this.Wolvie basically goes berserk and the story takes place everywhere across the globe with a tonne of guest stars.Tremendous action and a very epic balls to the wall storyline overall.
