Default CA: Winter Soldier reading recommendation...

Hi! I'm thinking to delve into the Winter Soldier story by Brubaker before the film comes out, and I was wondering whether I should get the entire saga (in the Ultimate Collection) or would the second book (Winter Soldier, Book 2) suffice? Is the first book that integral to the plot of the second half? Thanks!

I'd suggest ultimate, it adds a lot to the mystique of the Winter Soldier. The last page in issue 1 was worth it alone, its nice to imagine reading those fist few issues under fresh eyes.

If your scrapped for cash then yeah just go for the second book, but I recommend the the full thing.
Steve Rogers: You ready to follow Captain America into the jaws of death?
James Barnes: Hell, no! The little guy from Brooklyn who was too dumb not to run away from a fight. I'm following him."

You need to start at the beginning of Bru's run.

And once you start, just sit back and enjoy the ride. It's absolute brilliance in print!

But, no. You cannot hop on with just the Winter Soldier solo book. It hits the ground running from the events in the main Captain America run.
Freedom is the ability to live without fear of persecution. Nothing more, and certainly nothing less.

It's best to get the full story (and the real story, because there's no doubt the movie will gloss over a few things) with the Ultimate Collection. You won't regret it. From that point, you can either skip to the solo or keep reading Cap. Cap basically becomes a Bucky book soon after that arc is over.

Thanks, though I think there's some confusion... I'm not talking about the recent Winter Soldier series, but the Captain America: The Winter Soldier books of Brubaker's run. That is the first 2 trades of his run, I believe?

I would definitely read starting at issue 1. It is a great story and adds a lot of the weight to the story.

Also, there is an article on Comic Book Movie that suggests that the film may also be based on Nick Fury vs. S.H.I.E.L.D. I have never read that mini series but it sounds interesting.

Thanks. Actually, I tried looking for a TPB of Nick Fury vs. SHIELD, but apparently there's none. I checked Amazon, and it's only coming out this October 2013. It really might be more than a coincidence...
