you should probably pick up the House of M mini to see why this Civil War event is even taking place. better yet pick up Avengers disassembled (#500-504 i think to find out why House of M even started)

the best marvel comics out right now (imo) that i'm sure a lot of people would agree with me

-daredevil: (start from the beginning of Bendis' run (TradePaperBack #3) or if you want to know the history, read Frank Millers legendary run (TPB Visionaries #2, (3 if u want), and Born Again)
-captain america: like daredevil, i never cared about these characters, but the fantastic writing just blows you away
-young avengers: awesome writing, picking up the first series is a good idea
-runaways: more awesome writing by brian k vaughn.
-incredible hulk: once again, i never cared for the hulk, but the current arc or chapter out right now, Planet Hulk, only 4 or 5 issues in so it should be easy to pick up is just fantastic.
-new avengers: i personally like it.. i know others dont feel the same
-astonishing x-men: best x-men out at the moment. Pick up X-Men when you see Brubaker (writes daredevil and captain america atm) and Billy Tan working on it, coming soon)
    - the ultimates: arguably the best marvel comic out right now. pick up the first story line too, trust me on this
if you like spiderman.. i hear ultimate spider-man is a good read, but a lot of catchin up you'll have to do

i can't think of more at the moment, but those are the marvel lines at the moment that a majority of people are reading. like i said previously, i never cared a damn bout daredevil, captain america, or the hulk, but the writers are so fantastic, they changed my views completely.

now if you want to get more into the history of marvel, you should probably ask the more expertise people around here =P

i would suggest DC's Vertigo lines too as they're my favorite (i dont follow DC super heros). Vertigo is based more on stories.. the favorites of everyone seems to be Y, The Last Man, Fables, & DMZ. there's a lot of classic Vertigo out there like V for Vendetta, Watchmen, Sandman, Transmetropolitan, Hellblazer, etc etc.. there's SO much good stuff out there! have fun with it

oh and i'm LOVING the annihilation event (involves silver surfer, thanos etc) that's going on right now in marvel (the other event going on besides the whole Civil War going on). it's definately not too late to pick it up

read the Annihilation prelude (or something like that)
the Silver Surfer, Super Skrull, Super Nova, and Ronan mini's that go with it

    trust me on the hulk!

also x-factor is really good, written by Peter David. it's a different type of X-book, it has a more of a detective style to it

After you cruise through House Of M, Avengers Dissasembled and some other recent books, you should check out X-Factor, along with X-Men 198.

    New Avengers

any Miller Daredevil is fantastic, also anything from volume 2, is a great read. AStonishing X-Men is marvelous.

Runaways by far is my favorite title.

I would avoid The Inevitable, especially if you're new to the character. Grab the 'Extremis' arc, by Warren Ellis and Adi Granov. It is in some ways a reinvention of the character, and very new-reader friendly. It's also pivotal to most everything else going on with the character at the moment.

I wasn't clear on if you were trying out the comics or trade paperbacks. If you're new to comics I'd recommend buying the various trades of those titles first before going to the monthly books. You'll enjoy having the complete stories in one book and get caught up to speed much quicker than buying the monthlies.

For Iron Man I recommend picking the current series up from #7 onwards. I'm not a big Iron Man fan but I'm loving the current arc.

Ultimates, Daredevil and Walking Dead for sure, though, they're all stellar books, top tier, far above the rest etc.. In fact, i am going as far to say that the last 3 YEARS of DD has been completely awesome..........that's really saying something.

Welcome to comics and to CBR in general, DC_2099!

I second all of daletron's recommendations.

And in addition to those, I've been enjoying SHE-HULK, SQUADRON SUPREME, and NEXTWAVE: AGENTS OF HATE quite a bit as well.

But the best advice I can give a new comics reader is to not be afraid to try new titles, new authors. No one is going to be as good at deciding what you enjoy as you are, so for your first couple of months in comicdom, read whatever you think you might like.

Personally, once I've found an author I like, I follow that person's work regardless of what property he or she is writing. For me, good stories are more contingent upon writers than the characters they're working with, which is somewhat paradoxical in character-driven fiction.

In any case, it's good to see new people on the boards. Post as much as you like.
