You guys are probably going to hate someone like me but here goes:

I have really loved the Avengers movies as well as the x-men movies so I wanted to start actually reading the comic books. I feel like a fraud liking them so much without having read the books. I know that the trades are a good place to start....so

    Any recommended trades for

    Wolverine
    Thor
    Iron Man

    Thanks in advance

Nothing wrong with showing an interest in a great medium / hobby! Luckily for you there are a massive amount of great stories about each of the characters you've mentioned.

Wolverine: He's been one of the "best there is" at being a member of the X-Men since Uncanny X-Men #93, and had lots of solo adventures since. I'd mostly recommend Frank Miller's original mini series (80's), anything by Jason Aaron (00's) and Wolverine: Enemy of the State by Mark Millar (00's).

Thor has had acclaimed runs by lots of great writers. IMO he is best defined by Walt Simonson and further fleshed out by Dan Jurgens and FURTHER fleshed out in a more modern sense by JMS and Keiron Gillain.

I'm not the best authority on Iron Man, but I've read that the upcoming IM movie will be based loosely on Warren Ellis's epic IM story: Extremis which I would highly recommend.

Were you after old school, classic stuff, or comics that are currently running?

I'm only reading Iron Man at the moment. I can't recommend the current run of 'Invincible Iron Man' by Matt Fraction and Salvador Larroca enough. It continues the themes of the first movie, with Tony Stark trying to change his company to produce something positive while dealing with high-tech rivals who are out to destroy him. A really twisty, intricate plot and lots of acerbic black humour. Tony is like the same character from the films; only a bit more somber and reflective due to experience.
Start with the first 'Invincible Iron Man' omnibus or the trade collection 'The Five Nightmares'.

Also good is the miniseries 'Extremis' by Warren Ellis. It set the tone for the current incarnation of Iron Man, with the emphasis on futurism and bleeding-edge technology.
The stories 'Demon In A Bottle' and 'The Armour Wars' are considered classics from a few decades ago.

I'll leave Thor and Wolverine recommendations up to other people, but I have to say, even though you didn't ask for it, one Avengers related comic you should read is Captain America by Ed Brubaker.
Starting with the trade collection 'Winter Soldier', it's one of the best, most consistent and smartest books still running. Like a cross-generational James Bond movie on steroids.
(It's also one of the only cases where a major recon of past continuity was not only accepted but celebrated). Cap has to face an old ally turned enemy and his whole universe gets turned upside down. The book essentially put Captain America at the center of Marvel's spy/espionage universe.

Can't agree more with recommending Ed Brubaker's Captain America. That is the book that got me back into reading comics after many years away from the medium entirely. The entire run is available in trades and it ties in to both the modern Iron Man and modern Thor titles.

If you can afford it their are some great omnibuses for each character.

Wolverine Omnibus - Collects some of his best early stories(The original miniseries, Weapon X, and Kitty Pryde/Wolverineetc.)

Thor Walter Simonson Omnius - Simonsons run is Thors definitive run.

Iron Man Matt Fraction Omnibus - Basically the movie version of Iron-Man.

Dark Phoenix Saga. You should be able to find it TPB. Then you can be angry like the rest of us over how badly X-men 3 ****** up the story. Your not a true comic book message board poster until your angry about something. It will have Wolverine in it but his role will be less substantial than in X3 and he won't have indestructible pants either.

Plus its a good starting point for current Marvel since current Marvel's big event, X-men job to the Avengers er . . . . . Avengers vs X-men, is about the return of the Phoenix. And you might even enjoy it since you won't realize that Marvel is completely ignoring the 30 years of continuity in between the first Dark Phoenix story and the current one.

Price your book at $3.99 and I'll trade wait. Make me wait too long for the trade PAPERback and I'll say screw it. I'm looking at you Marvel and Spider Island.

Right now, you might want to try Avengers vs X-men.

For a new reader, i suspect its a story that you will really enjoy and it's only just started.

    Default Greetings!

    Hi guys!

I'm Ibne and I'm new to the forums. I used to be into comics big time as a kid but somewhere along the road I stopped renewing my subscriptions.

After watching the Avengers this past weekend I realized that I really miss it (and the fact that the movies are never true to the comics makes me mad!). So I google'd and I found CBR, and I figured that you guys might be kind enough to help me get back into comics.

I heard of some reboots and stuff a while back. Is there any particular series that's easy to get into, storyline wise? I'm more of a Marvel fan but there are some DC characters that I like. Basically all the Justice League members.

    So, any recommendations?

    Thanks!

Default New to comics- Where to start?

After seeing Avengers for the second time yesterday, I've decided I might be interested in reading some actual comic books. The problem is, like some other people I've seen on these forums, I have no idea where to start.

The characters I'm most interested in are Captain America, Hawkeye, and then the Avengers series as a whole. I'd also prefer to read a more recent series (the artwork from half a century ago doesn't really interest me), so if there is some sort of 'reboot' type series for each of those, I'd prefer to start there.

    So yeah... Suggestions?

    Thanks!

Hi Harvest, welcome to the CBR forums!

For Captain America, try Captain America: Winter Soldier. It's a cool espoinage-based story that involves a figure from Captain America's past. If you find Captain America more interesting as a hero than an agent, I'd suggest Captain America: Operation Rebirth.

I'd also suggest Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes - it's a retelling of the early days of the Avengers with a modern art style. It includes Captain America waking up in the modern day and Hawkeye joining the team for the first time. There's not a lot of action, but the characters are very well written. For an Avengers series set closer to the present day, take a look at Avengers: The Children's Crusade.

The best Avengers run in my opinion is Kurt Busiek's, which run for about 50 issues. The art might be a little bit dated for you - 1998 - but it's got really excellent writing. It starts with Avengers Assemble volume 1.

Hawkeye has had a couple of good miniseries lately. See if you like Hawkeye: Blindspot, which is about him trying to discover the identity of a mysterious assassin as he slowly loses his eyesight. The Avengers are in it a little bit too.

Exacly the book you wnt can be found here: http://www.amazon.com/The-Ultimates-...6578930&sr=1-4

Read the Amazon.com description and user reviews. It's the best Captain America and Avengers origin you will find anywhere. Don't believe anything else. Start with this.

Don't read the Kurt Busiek Avengers. It's written in that old outdated style that you are NOT looking for. Some people like it because it's written so old timey. It will bore you.

I’ll second the recommendation for Joe Casey’s Earth’s Mightiest Heroes (not to be confused with the cartoon tie-in by the same name).

The movies borrow pretty heavily from the Ultimate line … except where Captain America is concerned. The portrayal of Captain America in the Ultimates is terrible. If you liked him in the movies then you're better off with “old fashioned” portrayals like Kurt Busiek's or Mark Waid’s. Actually, Ed Brubaker (the current Captain America writer) does a pretty great job of balancing classic characterization and modern storytelling sensibilities.
New and improved me. Now with a CAPITAL “B”.
