Um... wow. I remember asking a similar question to this on a DC-focused website last summer when I was brand new to comics, and all I got was abuse for not knowing less popular DC characters. Here you've all posted really well-thought out, structured comments iwht Amazon links that must have taken you a while to sort out. Thank you.

As per your recommendations, I've ordered the first 3 issues of the current 'Avengers Assemble' series along with Straczynski's Thor Volume 1, Morrison's New X-Men Volume 1 & Iron Man Extremis because I like the premise.

Thanks guys - I'll be sure to bear this in mind when buying in future - seems like I have a lot of awesome stuff to read!

ANYTHING by DnA. If you are a lover of Sci-fi quirk like me then Abnett and Lanning are your GODS!! They made Marvel in space cool again. Claremonts X-men are history that MUST BE READ!! And I have a soft spot for almost anything by Brubaker. And Morrison is the preferred X-scribe although I give it Whedon on his Astonishing X-run. We need to know more about your tastes to make informed recommendations.

Most of Hawkeye's good stories have been as a member of the Avengers. Here are some of the stories he had a prominent role in:

Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes (shows how Hawkeye joined the Avengers)
    Avengers: Hawkeye (he meets Mockingbird)
West Coast Avengers: Assemble (Hawkeye leads his own Avengers team)
    Solo Avengers Classic vol 1
New Avengers: The Reunion (note that he's calling himself Ronin in this story and wearing a weird black uniform without the bow, but it's a good prelude for Hawkeye and Mockingbird)
    Secret Avengers: The Descendants
    Avengers Solo: Hawkeye

    Enjoy!

Try The Thanos Quest, which is a prequel to Infinity Gauntlet, and just as good (even arguably better).

I've already read 'Amazing Spider-Man: Coming Home', 'Uncanny X-Men: Dark Phoenix' and I'm currently reading the Avengers vs X-Men series as it is released.

In theory, I'm interested in Spider-Man, X-Men (with familiar characters like Cyclops or Wolverine, etc) and Avengers (again, preferably with familiar characters; Cap, Thor, Iron Man, etc.) and anything else relating to them that is a great read. Also kind of interested in Ultimate, but not too sure if that's a good place to start.

Any advice or recommendations would be hugely appreciated!
Essentially most of the recommendations above are great places to pick up at. Since you are reading Avengers vs. X-Men, I'd thought I chip in and recommend two of the following as X-Men reads, Messiah Complex, detailing the birth of Hope and what happens afterward and Second Coming, where Hope returns and joins the X-Men. Between that there are solid runs of Cable and X-Force (with a brief event called Messiah War sandwiched in) but they aren't that vital to follow for the event.

For the Ultimate brand, as others have mentioned, Ultimate Spider-man, but definitely pick up Millar's first two volumes of Ultimates and if you are really interested in more like those two, skip Ultimates 3, Ultimatum and New Ultimates and jump right into the Ultimate Comics: Avengers series. If you still like what is going on there, you should be able to transition into the current Ultimates series that is going on right now.

If you dug Dark Phoenix, I think you'd probably also enjoy the Claremont/Paul Smith run on Uncanny X-Men (#165-175). That's one of my favorite.

If you're interested in Iron Man, I recommend Armors Wars 1 and 2. They're both fantastic Iron Man stories, although they don't have much to do with each other. I also really enjoy the issues included in the Iron Man: War Machine collection.

I know most modern fans are divided on this, but I thought Civil War was really good.

If you dig crossovers, I think you can't go wrong with Infinity Gauntlet and Infinity War. You can pass on Infinity Crusade, though.

Finally, I think Avengers: Under Siege is necessary reading if you're interested in the Avengers!

Good to hear a new Marvel knight. Lol. Brian Bendis Daredevil followed by Brubakers Darwdevil would be a great story to check out, Ultimate Spiderman is another side you said Ultimate. For recent books I'd tell you Journey into Mystery, Uncanny X-Force, Amazing Spiderman starting at 666, Wolverine an the X-Men, and Venom, if any of these I'd go with Venom, starting at issue one, you won't be disappointed currently my #1 title of any company.

I've been reading Marvel for awhile and am reading most of the popular books currently, but could someone recommend me something on the Marvel app from not too long ago that you consider great reading.

Is Secret Warriors any good? I've been wanting to get into it cause I'm a huge Fury fan, and did anyone get Fury Max? I want to read it but have been told its part of a bigger Fury story in the Max universe

It starts of as a rather generic “proactive superhero team” comic that happens to have someone named Nick Fury in it (at times it felt he was only Fury in name). Then Nick gradually started taking the spotlight away from the kids and the series ended by showing Fury as an awesome spymaster who has been pulling people’s strings for decades.

It’s a really good read if you can get past the moronic reveal about half-way into the series. I’m not sure if that was a case of “the writer finally finding his footing” or it was a case of “nothing is at it seems in a spy story” but either way the series redeemed itself in the end.

As for the MAX line, well I don’t recall anyone having anything nice to say about the last Fury MAX mini but maybe this will be better. Hopefully Ennis won’t be writing this time.
New and improved me. Now with a CAPITAL “B”.
