Default It's the "I'm New Here" Thread

With the forums now functioning better than they have in months, we've seen a nice surge in new members joining these forums. For those of you who don't know where to begin, why not start right here by introducing yourself and getting to know everyone else around here. Tell us a bit about yourself and what brought you to these forums by replying in this thread. The CBR Community will help guide you through this crazy place we call the CBR Forums.

    Welcome to CBR!

Hey guys. Just thought I'd say hello if I haven't met you somewhere else before now. :)

Certainly are a lot of unfamiliar names about, but considering the toilet I'm coming from, that's probably a good thing...

Big hello to paulski... So, you're a porn addict, huh? How's that working out for you? You don't have to answer that.

Ummm, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I registered earlier this year, but I never introduced myself anywhere properly. I just bursted in and started yapping. Yap, yap, yap. Here I go again.

Not giving away much about my vital statistics, because I think the beauty of a forum is that you basically reduce yourself to a message. You're not a colour or a people or a class, you're just typed words. Just a little then: I'm twenty years old and I have a lot of spare time on my hands. I live with a cat and a dog, I listen to eighties pop, nineties R&B, and a bunch of rock bands, I collect Uncanny X-Men and sparingly pick up a couple of other Marvel titles, and I am the biggest Transformers fan you ever did see.

I first came in contact with CBR when I was looking for X-Men comic book reviews on Google. I discovered the discussions and I was fascinated by all these posters reading the same magazines I do and discussing them fervidly. So, I decided to register so that I could ask questions that had not been asked or answered. I haven't been a very useful participant around here yet, and I have been known to spout around a lot of incorrect information.

I usually hang around X-Books, although I've recently been venturing around other forums, as well.

I have a tendency of overstaying my welcome really fast. I still remember that I was once thrown out of a chat room only minutes after registering. They thought I was a 'lamer'. You decide whether they were right or not, but as you can tell, I love hearing the sound of my own voice... Or reading the words of my own... eh... whatever.

So, Jonah, is this just a thread where people drop their name, sizes and likes and dislikes, or can you, like, ask questions and mingle a little with other newbs or oldies?

Oh, but don't expect me to say a lot for the next two months. I'm doing the intro bit out of politesse, but I'm pulling a Houdini not too many days from now. Heck, I won't even have the means to buy that many comic books, except for the lone monthly.

    I pass the baton.

First off, welcome! Don't know exactly what shape this thread will take, but for now let's say everything goes. It shouldn't necessarily become a chat thread -- that's what Rita's is fore -- but if people have any questions about these forums or venturing outside this thread, feel free to ask 'em here.

Thank you, Jonah! You make me feel very welcome. Even though I've been posting for weeks now, I was feeling a bit uneasy about just butting into the threads and talking like I'd been around for years...:)

What's this 'Rita's' you mention? You say it's a chat thread??? Where is it?

Don't worry about it, that's how the rest of us got to be here. We just butted in. I did, in any case.

Rita's is an all purpose, no topic thread on the Community Board. All talk all the time.

    Welcome Newbies!

For those starting out, let me give you the quick show around the comm board.

Rita's is a totally out of context thread that acts more like a chat room. Just jump in. It caps at 5K posts and starts again.

The Cover Contest- is a weekly thread contest where the winner of the previous week posts a subject for the next contest and you scour your brain and internet to find a cover that fits. Ex. With a theme like "Evil Twins" you would post an image of a cover that shows your Evil Twins. Voting takes place on Tuesday and new contests go up on Wednesday.

The Avatar Contest- This is another weekly contest same as the cover contest. The winner of the previous week picks a theme like "the number 10" and you change your avatar to match that theme. You might use an image of a dime, or the 10 commandments or the 10th Dr Who. Voting takes place on Tuesday and new contests go up on Wednesday.

Show Me Your Visage- This is a thread where you can post pics of yourself. Keep it clean and work safe is usually a good rule.

Caturday- This is a thread where you can post pics of cats mostly but all animals are welcome.

Thanks for stopping by. Take a look around and dive in.

Two other long-running threads (most of which do what they say on the tin):

Ask the Jew -- TypoLad et. al clear up some confusion about Judaism

Ask the Atheist -- Mike Smash! et. al clear up some confusion about Atheism

Feel free to use the search function to see if the question already got asked and answered. Because it gets boring answering the same questions over again.

(Oh, and how come you're a Jew or an Atheist, questions along the lines of "how come you can't see Yog-Sothoth is the One True God?" are strongly discouraged).

There are also ongoing megathreads for the Iraq War and for Religion/Philosophy. By all means wake the sleeping dogs.
