Default The Official Spider-Man TPB Discussion Thread

You've asked for it, and I've finally decided to give it to you! My (eventual) generosity knows no bounds!

This thread is dedicated to discussion of the hundreds of collected (and original) volumes of the Spider-Man library. Ask for recommendations, find out what has and hasn't been collected, talk about your favorites, share any great deals you find in your online travels.

I'd like this to be as much a discussion thread as it is a recommendation one, and I'd like to see if we as a board can step up our game a bit. Threads about which Spidey costume is the best and what should happen in the 4th movie are fun and all, but let's try to be more substantive here.

This'll be a work in progress for a little while, so bear with me. The first few posts will continue to evolve over time, and for right now I've just thrown up some lists from older threads. If you see any mistakes or have any books to add, let's hear it.

    We have a rules thread?

    :p

On topic I suggest these SpiderMan books if you are hungry for a "Spidey on the edge!":

Marvel Knights Spider-Man Vol. 1: Down Among the Dead Men
Marvel Knights Spider-Man Vol. 2: Venomous
Marvel Knights Spider-Man Vol. 3: The Last Stand

For a lighthearted read I suggest:

Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Vol. 1: Derailed
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Vol. 2: Mystery Date

    :)

Meh.... The artwork is good but the story is just okay. I'd say you can do without it.

Yeah, nothing to write home about. It was sold mainly on the strength of tying in to the first New Avengers storyline. Great if you like obscure villains teaming up and fighting each other, though.

Spider-Man Breakout is like a slightly inferior version of Villains United but with MU villains. If you for some reason love Crossfire, Mandrill, Mr. Fear, The Controller and the U-Foes, this book is for you.

Seeing that this story was collected in a trade makes me think to bring this up...

Round Robin: The Sidekick's Revenge. What the HELL was up with that story?

The plot itself was a straightforward super hero adventure, but how friggin WEIRD is it that it was a plot line in Amazing Spider-Man?

It was not written by series regular David Micheline, but rather by Al Milgrom. (Though it was drawn by Bagley, in what was only his second story as regular ASM artist)

The story was about a relatively minor supporting character from Moon Knight teaming up with old-time bad guys from the '70s Captain America run to kidnap Nova from New Warriors. To get him back, Spider-Man teamed up with Night Thrasher, Moon Knight, Punisher, and Darkhawk. Along the way, they faced such henchmen as the Seekers, three guys in armor who made exactly one appearance in Fantastic Four years earlier, and one member of the Wrecking Crew.

This was 1991. Moon Knight and the New Warriors both had their respective series. What the heck was this doing in Amazing Spider-Man? And as a SIX-ISSUE arc, no less (albeit released over three months)? It's commonplace today, but again, this was 1991.

It's just strange, is all. It's like Micheline was out with the flu, so Milgrom decided to say, "Hey, Spidey fans, here's all these other heroes who's books you could be buying!"
