Winick Is Lord!

I wanted to start a thread to one of MY favorite X-writers EVAR, Judd Winick! His time on Exiles is definatively the best that book has seen, and if it weren't for him (and Califiore, obvs), I wouldnt have my fav NOCTURNE!!!

What I love about him was his awesome balance between character development and action in Exiles. The book really didn't have any specific "star" which stole all the limelight, everyone got thier time to shine. And when he wrote specific issues for specific characters (issue 16, the Mariko/MJ story), jesus christ it was superb. His handle on dialogue and characterization is unmatched.

Anyway, share your Winick love here! And please don't come in here to bash, this is a NICE thread.

Winnixiles rocked. Was always the first title in my pull list. I loved the Weapon X centric arc, the arc where the world had caught the Lizard plague, the Evil Mimic (the Big M), the unwinding on a beach (retractable tail and all issue) and killing Magneto and Rogue's son in the second issue. I so thought he was gonna be the star of the show!

I even enjoyed his Red Hood stuff in Batman. Haven't read anything of his since though.

God, what an amazing issue!!! I loved how Winick dealt with homosexuality too. It was a part of Mariko that was explored but neither dwelled on or left to the speculation of readers. She was a lesbian, however she was also an Xman, an Exile, a Gladiator, a friend and confidant. Her sexuality was only part of her, not all.

After Magik. I kind of liked Illyana, because she gave the team some much needed internal conflict. And she replaced Blink. I liked Blink, but she bored me a tad.

And the lack of DEMONCHYLDE was a ++ for my Ruskaya podruga.

Now Mimic, on the other hand... BEST. MIMIC. EVER.

I wish Exiles Sunfire, Mimic, and Sasquatch could replace OUR Sunfire, Mimic, and Sasquatch.

I really liked Ilyanna too! Mainly because up til that point, all the Exiles got along and were friends. Now throw this bitch into the pot and BAM. She was a ho. I loved her hitting on Morph like..RIGHT after Mariko died. She was SUCH a crazy ho!

Hyperion however was batshit crazy and I loved it!

It's probably the reason I still read the title. And that was years back now!

And yes, Tet. You def need to get Exiles trades 1-6 at least. Issues 16 and 34 are definite standouts.

Mimic was actually super awesome in Exiles. I didn't expect to love him as much as I did, but he ROCKED!! WOO EXILES!

Winick is very good on charactors that don't have much of a history to write. He can shape and create them in the image he likes. But once he jumps on books with established charactorization he pretty much f-cks it up.

His DC work has been shoddy. You haven't missed anything. The Batman stuff was decent. But after he left Exiles he really lost it.
