Default Is Blu-Ray winning the format war?

I've noticed that there seem to be more movies offered on Blu-Ray. I also heard that Blu-Ray discs have a much greater storage capacity than HD-DVD's.

Given both of these facts, why would anyone buy an HD-DVD player? The only positive I see with HD-DVD players is that they seem to be almost half the cost of Blu-Ray machines. That's a big difference in price but is it worth it if you have a lot fewer movies to watch or worst case, the studios stop supporting the format all together.

Blu-Ray and HD-DVD isn't about advancing technology. It's about advancing their creators pocket books.

Spend 100-200 bucks on an upconverting DVD player and your old DVDs will look almost as good as the HD-DVDs and Blu-Rays anyway.

Considering that stuff was announced a year ago and never caught on I wouldnt put any faith in it. Hell a upconverting search on ebay turns up like 20 results. It doesnt exactly work as promised. Its a miracle cure than looks and sounds flashy, but doesnt do much.

    Anyway back on topic.

I dont own either yet as I cant even afford a hi def tv but when I get one when Im out of nursing school and start making some more cash as long as the library is good I will get a blu-ray player that has support for normal dvds as well. That way I can keep my nice collection of stuff I have now and still be able to get stuff in hi def.

But blu ray from a technical standpoint is superior if nothing else because it has alot more storage space on it. Far as quality, thats debateable since no store is setup to really show a tv's quality with all the lighting and space and people who review stuff have different tv's, hi def players, and so on of different quality. From my experince there isnt much difference, but blu ray on average seemed to be a little better.

But hell, go out and buy a ps3 for a crapload of good upcoming games and you get a blue ray player included with it so your set both ways.

But far as price, blu ray players will come down soon. They are still new technology so still expensive as with everything when it first comes out.

Plain ol' DVD is winning the format war so far. I don't see huge interest in the next-gen formats one way or another, surely not enough for it to qualify as a "war".

I saw a news blip a while back that said the porn industry went with HD, so that'll probably be the 'winner'.

And,my cousin has a blue-ray player, and we watched a movie on it, and it didn't really look or sound any different than an HD-DVD... certainly not an few extra hundred dollars better.

Blue Ray will probably be another example of Sony inntroducing a new format that fails.

I have nearly 300 DVDs, and I'm not buying an HD player until the format "war" is decided and a reasonably-priced ($500 or less) HD recorder hits the market.

I agree with that, the adult industry has been the "king maker" in the past when it came to format wars. A very big reason why VHS beat Beta and DVD beat DIVX was because they were early proponents of those winning formats. This despite the fact that Beta was/is a far superior format to VHS which is why the broadcasting industry still uses beta as the standard.

I respectfully disagree. I have both an upconverting DVD player and HD cable. I can definetly tell the difference between HD and the unconverting DVD player. HDTVs in themselves have to upconvert whatever comes into them, so using a regular DVD player I think works about the same as an upconverting DVD player. That's just my opinion.

Oh yeah, and I think from what I have been reading is that HD-DVD was winning at first, but Blu-Ray has caught up and now surpassed its sales.

Well, it's still pretty early. I mean it took DVD players about ten years to replace the VCR. As for the war, it's between HD DVD and Blu-Ray. I imagine the only people interested in either machine right now are your technophiles, a/v enthusiasts, and early adopters. I probably won't even get one until I'm sure one of the formats is clearly dead.

I've heard this statement also and they base off of the fact that back in the early 80s, the porn industry backed VHS, and that is why it won. I will agree with that because back then there was not an easy way to get porn in the home. Nowadays, you can get all of the free porn you want off of the internet, so it won't be as big of a factor.

Also, do you really want HD porn? Just think about all of the stretch marks and plastic surgery scars that will be visable now. And don't forget about ass pimples. EEWWW!!!
