midtown comics is like the Wal-Mart of comic books in NYC. It'll have pretty much all you need. It's hard to find small mom&Pop shops with half the stuff.
Kids, if you want to impress your date, remember it’s “a dog-eat-dog world,” not “a doggy dog world.”

What the guy above me said.

But if you want to persue more than one place, try forbidden Planet (e13th or 14th street I think)
Church: So it is a sword, It just happens to function like a key in very specific situations.
Caboose: Or it's a key all the time, and when you stick it in people, it unlocks their death.

You can do quite a good circut of geeky shops in NY.

It's been a few years since I lived in the city so some addresses might be off, check a phone book or www.superpages.com to confirm.

Midtown is at 40th street and Broadway. Huge shop, tons of stuff, statues, back issues and lots of TPBs.

Jim Handley's Universe is on 5th ave and 33rd street (west side), about a 15 minute walk. If Midtown doesn't have it Handley's will.

Just across 5th avenue (East side) is Compleat Strategist a gaming, miniatures, RPG shop.

Going south to 6th ave and 23rd is Cosmic Comics. Smaller than the first two but strong on back issues.

Further south on 14th and 7th ave (or 8th?) is Time Warp which actually is the first place I go for 70s or 80s back issues and collections, really, really prices there and a great selection.

Still moving south is Forbidden Planet (which is related to the UK chain) on 13th and Broadway. It's changed a lot since I first went in the 80s and now is more toys, collectables and such, few back issues but lots of TBPs.

Down and East from there is St Marks Comics on 8th street between 2nd and 3rd. Cramped shop with tons of back issues and bargain bins.

Finally from there go to 2nd ave between 7th and 8th and on the second floor is Toy Tokyo filled with colletables and Japanese toys.

There was also Village comics but they closed sometime in the last two years (RIP).

If only there were a comic book store in Brooklyn of some sort...

    as I was saying...haha! LOL! :)

    In Manhattan:
The Midtown East is the one I use (get off at 42nd street on the 2/3 - red liine), they also have a West side one now (near Grand Central, 4 or 5 probably easiest), but Hanley's is very good. And there's this new little shop near where I work, on St. Mark's, right off Broadway near Wall Street. They also sell tons of Baseball and other sports memorbilia.

Rocketship needs to be mentioned. If for no other reason than the parties. And also I was just there last night.

There's always THE St. Mark's Comic store. Right around 2nd avenue (around there). IMHO, the best comics store ever. Kind tough to walk in the aisles, but still the selection is the bomb.

EDIT: I just saw somebody else posted the St. Mark's store. It's still good though!

Rocketship, the best comic shop in America!

This shop has a great selection, the best atmosphere, and really cool parties (so I hear) pretty often.

Yeah, St. Marks is ok as long as you don't go on a Wensday. The place is kinda narrow and if you add a heaping amount of anxious, fat, sweaty nerds...well, you can imagine.

I just wanna say a big thankyou to all the people who took time to reply to my question, some usefull information there, thanks!. A special thankyou to Kid Kyoto for your suggested tour of NYC's comic shops, I'm not sure it would be fair to drag my good lady friend round all those stores (I've already got her to agree to seeing Spider-man 3 and Grindhouse while we're there!) but I'll try to visit some of them.

No problem man. And if it helps this tour takes you through the heart of Manhattan, Times Square (Midtown Comics), Empire State Building (Jim Handley), Flatiron Building (Cosmic), and Greenwitch Village (Forbidden Planet and St Marks).

They assign you a member number. You give it to them every time you buy something, and they record how much you spent in the computer. Every time your total hits $100, you get $20 in store credit.
