I was really buzzed to see another Frank Miller comic book I enjoyed come to life on the big screen. Yet while watching it, I was reminded a bit of another book (and anime) I like. Berserk.
Now both 300 and Berserk have similar target audiences. Older teens and adult guys. The whole Seinen market of manga (and comics) that it seems mostly Dark Horse has confronted. (Though Viz has had a couple back in the days of Pulp and now with Monster.)
Still, the way this movie was put together, the epic battles, it gave me flashback to Berserk, in particular some epic battle scenes from later in the manga. Though instead of 300 guys and a leader, you usually have just Guts fighting monstrocities and armies.
Also, the whole scene in 300 with the goat headed.. thing in the harem tent reminded me of that orgy scene in Berserk which also had a goat headed.. thing. Though in Berserk the scene went on and it had a snake growing out of it in a certain area.
This goat thing wasn't in the original 300 book. So that has me wondering if Snyder got it from Berserk. I know the chances are slim and more likely he just took it from general mythology, but I think it could be possible Snyder is a Berserk fan. If not, someone needs to reccomend it to him. Sounds right up his alley.
I think 300 is a good way to suggest Berserk to people. If someone walks into a comic store for 300, maybe suggesting Berserk as another title is a good idea. Lone Wolf and Cub, a manga that inspired Miller as a creator and one Miller helped bring to America before the manga craze, is another good one to suggest.
