    Default Pipeline #504 - 06 Feb 2007

Coming this week to a Pipeline near you:

    * Modern Masters: Kevin Maguire
    * Ordinary Victories by Manu Larcenet
    * Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #214 by Christos Gage and Phil Winslade (beautiful book)
    * Five Years Ago in Pipeline: Marvel Mangaverse Event, Peter Parker reveals his secret to Aunt May

Now I shall maintain radio silence while I finish proofreading this beast.

I didn't pre-order the Maguire MM, but I'll get it at some point so I'm anxious to hear of all the fabulous stuff it contains. Really want to read the thing, but there's a John Byrne and a Walt Simonson MM sitting in the "to read" pile and I don't want it to get any bigger.

    Final thought - Maguire rules.

The second volume is absolutely fabulous, it's one of my favorite comic!
Read it, i guess you won't be disappointed ;-)

I just picked up the Modern Masters John Byrne and Walt Simonson books since I enjoyed the recent George Perez Storyteller. How do the MM formatted books read?

    Cool column!

. Why Winslade isn't one of WIZARD's Top Ten artists is beyond me.
    1. Lack of a regular, monthly gig
    2. Lack of a big name project

What's the last few things he did at Marvel? Howard the Duck, 3 issues of DD, and that old Spidey / DD mini? And now he's doing a cancelled Bat-book? He deserves a title with higher recognition.

roach04 and jclaus, thanks for picking up the books!

As for how they read, jclaus, the text is in interview form. I try to give the books an informal and intimate feel so as to get the artist's personality across better. My collaborators and I don't shy away from asking tough questions, but we don't go fishing for dirt either. Hopefully after reading the books you'll have a pretty good understanding of how the artist thinks and works. If not, at least you'll have a lot of nice art to look at.

Bonjour, Lychen. NBM Publishing has reprinted (and translated, thankfully) two or three of Larcenet's works here in the States. ASTRONAUTS OF THE FUTURE is his other book, but that was written by Lewis Trondheim. I liked that book, but it's not as good as ORDINARY VICTORIES.

Jamie - You are a killjoy. If I were EIC of Marvel or DC, I'd make him the regular penciller of JLA or X-MEN tomorrow, if he was willing to draw either of them. He's done a lot of work on AQUAMAN lately, too. Yeah, he's got a career management issue. Sad.

I do what I can... ;) How about this: assuming that Dr. Strange has a handful of mini's in the future how awesome would he be on a title like that? Or a how about being one of the 2 artists on a Spider-book? Hell, fill in for Kuburt on a MAIN Bat-book.

Frankly, I'd keep Marcos Martin busy doing Dr. Strange minis. I love his work, and he brings a bit of Ditko-esque quirkiness to the book that is very appealing. But I think Winslade would be just dandy on a Bat book.

I'll have to check out Ordinary Victories, but there are so many other European books I would really like to see translated — Belladonne, for one. I've held off on buying a lot of the Euro books just because I couldn't read them and get the full experience from them. I think if they were really careful with their selections, many of the European publishers could do fairly well here in the States with English editions. You'd think Jeremiah would have opened a few doors in that regard.

A couple of years back (whatever year it was) I actually wrote Marcos Martin in on my Eisner ballot as Best Cover Artist for his Batgirl: Year One covers. He has a real knack for cover composition.

I picked up a volume of BELLADONNA at San Diego CC last year. Beautiful book! And I can understand about every fourth panel or so. ;-)

The trick with importing the Euro albums to America is in keeping the art looking good. Shrinking down a lot of that art does nothing but pixellate and destroy it. ORDINARY VICTORIES withstood the shrinkage very well. But so many of the late Humanoids books couldn't say the same. It ought to be part of the Geneva Convention -- Francois Schuiten books must be printed at the larger size. Anything smaller is punishable by death!

Every time I see a Michael Turner cover all I can think is <Homer Simpson Voice>...so...hungry...</Homer Simpson Voice>.
