Default anime to watch with a seven year old

It doesn't have to be like Mister Rogers or whatever, just nothing horribly inappropriate (like FLCL or Puni Puni Poemi). The main thing is that it has a plot he can follow and stay interested in, it's in English, and that it's complete (in English).

He likes Naruto a lot, as well as Avatar (yeah, yeah... I know it's American). Any suggestions?

Do you think it's something I would enjoy too? (I'm his mom... I suppose I should have mentioned that we're both going to be watching it.) I like Avatar (lol), but most of the stuff that's geared specifically for kids isn't all that interesting to me.

I think you would like it to. The only way to know for sure is to watch it yourself.

Almost ANYTHING by Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli would be ideal, I should think.

Laputa: Castle in the Sky is a good place to start. Spirited Away is also excellent, as is Nausicaa, but I don't know how tolerant your kid is for girls as the lead in an adventure. My Neighbor Totoro is a beautiful movie, but not as action-packed as the others... if the kid gets swept up easily by art and wonder, though, I think you'd probably both love it. Pom Poko is pretty cool, with a powerful environmental message, and of course testicle humour always goes over well with kids.

All of 'em are available on DVD from Disney (they swept up the licensing, but don't let 'em give you the idea that they did ANYTHING but dub and release... it burns me up to think that people might consider these Disney films), all in fairly excellent English.

I know this might sound messed up, but I know I took a ballsy chance when I introduced to my cousin who was seven or close enough to that age with the anime classic Neon Genisis Evangelion. Seriously it messed her way of thinking for days, and then she was actually starting to ask me so many questions about the anime because it was just so different from what she normally viewed on tv. She's now about 14 and still loves it lol. But yea to keep on topic, one I think would be both fine and not too rique is Sailor Moon for a feminine touch, and for boys I would go with dragonball series

If he likes epic series like naruto he may like one piece, its aimed at kids too even more so than naruto, and i think its pretty addictive viewing :)

Well, depends on what you as a parent count as inappropriate. Are you okay with minor nudity? Blood? Deaths of important characters?

Now, if I had a kid, I 'd probably have him/her watch Rurouni Kenshin (with possible discussions on why killing is wrong) and Shaman King (with possible discussions on what makes people into "bad guys".) Then round it off with Card Captor Sakura, to take the edge of all the grown-up seriousness. ;)

One Piece and Inuyasha are also good bets.

Well, it's hard to say since we don't really know your preferences. Most shonen stuff is targeted at both kids and young adults, though.

Personally, I didn't like MÄR that much. I mean, not bad, but I've seen much better.

My first love affair with anime was Inuyasha... it was horrible when they stopped making it... I didn't understand much about anime at the time and didn't realize that could happen. Anyways, my son does watch some of the cartoon network episodes, but overall I refuse to watch it with him because it doesn't satisfy the most important requirement for what I watch... it's not yet complete.

I'll look into the various suggestions here. The only ones I won't watch (cause I unfortunately already have, at least in part) are Card Captor, Dragon Ball, or Evangelion (lol yeah, I know saying that won't make me popular here... but after my ex husband and I watched the whole thing we looked at each other and he said "let's never speak of this again" and I quickly agreed).

Female leads are okay, deaths of important characters could be okay (haha if it's not okay it would be more for my sake than his), blood is okay, nudity is not okay if it's in anyway at all sexual.

We're both fans of epic stuff, so I'll make sure I check out one piece. Those disney ones also sound somewhat promising... are they series or movies. But yeah, other than the ones I said I won't watch :evilsmile , I'll look into all of these and perhaps get his vote and start watching one of them with him once we're caught up on Avatar. Lol I can't wait till he can read faster and we can start watched subbed stuff. :D

Not too long ago I watched The Guyver anime with my youg cousin. He's a little under 7, but he liked it.

Azukin Cha Cha is an excellent Anime for children. It's pleasantly mild, yet interesting enough to where you won't be bored out of your skull.

    Also try:

    Sonic X
    Kirby
    Samurai Pizza Cats
    Beyblade (Stupid, but child friendly)
    Bottle Fairy
    Hamutaro
    Pichi Pichi Pich!

Well, I don't think Guyver (the old anime) would too appropriate for a 7 year old or anyone under 10 years old (ideally speaking, that is). *Waaaay* too much blood and gore, oh and cursing. Can't forget about the excessive cursing. the plot's easy enough to follow though.

Anyway, most of the good ones have already been named. Slayers is also an anime that's appropriate for kids and young adults.

Funny you should mention that... I'm just about done downloading everything Slayers. I thought about watching it with him but I was planning on watching it with my boyfriend (we like to watch something together after my son goes to bed). I was planning on seeing how my boyfriend likes it, and if he doesn't, watch it with my son. If he does I'll find something else to watch with my son.

Totoro or Castle in the Sky. The old Fox dub of Totoro is better, if you can find it.
