Default New CPUs To Be Installed This Week

Good news, folks, we should be upgrading the CBR servers sometimes this weekend to be twice as fast as they currently are. It's taken us a while to get this going due to a number of family obligations on my part, but all the necessary items for the upgrade should arrive on Wednesday. I don't believe I'll have a chance to do the upgrades until this coming weekend, but once done it should solve all the problems we've been having around here with slow downs on the server.

The upgrade will require that ALL of CBR be down for a short period. The plan is to pull both the CBR and CBR Forums/Blog server offline. We'll pull the existing CPU in the CBR Forums/Blog server and place that in the second slot on the CBR server. Then, the CBR Forums/Blog server will get two Pentium 4 Xeon 3.2 Ghz processors. Currently the CBR Forums/Blog server has only one Pentium 4 Xeon 2.4 Ghz processor, so when all is said and done it will actually be twice as fast as before, which should really make these forums blaze!

Thanks for your patience, folks. Looking forward to getting this done.

Well, they sent the wrong heat syncs for the CPUs. I'm told the correct ones will be here by Friday. Cross your fingers!

Great to know you are so on the ball, even if the people sending you the stuff don't have their act together.

    CBR down?

Holy crap, that might break the Internet!

Thankfully, I'm just installing new CPUs -- but, I just did run an extra incremental backup of that server today, JUST in case.

What happened with this? There are only 569 users on right now (216 members and 353 guests), and I keep getting timeout errors. The nature of the errors (especially when they occur) indicates that the problem is with the server, not the Internet.

For comparison's sake, the GateWorld forums use the same forum software package as this site, they typically have at least this many users (sometimes as many as 1,000), and I've never had these problems with that site.

Here is Jonah's last update from the Server Upgrade thread at the top of the Q&A forum.

Sorry, I've just not had any time to work on this or to even guide one of my admins on it. That will change next week -- Mark L will begin researching the problems we've been experiencing and we're going to make some changes to the MySQL database. It's possible we may just end up getting a second server to handle just the database interactions.

Sorry, folks. It's just had to become a lower priority the last month, but that changes now.
