I'm excited about the announcement but this is going to be one tough movie to make good.

It'll need a really good director with a good understanding of the characters, a good script and good casting decisions to put together a good Avengers movie so I hope it all goes well and I'm interested in who they'll pick for the roster.

I'm not going to try to cast my own fantasy characters anymore since that always leads to disappointment when the actual casting begins so I'll just wait it out and hope to be pleasantly surprised.

Well I don't like actor speculation, so I am going to speculate on the story:

Firstly, since writers have been announced a while back, I'm going to assume Thor, Cap, IM and Ant-Man movies will all be out first. Maybe not Thor, but maybe. So, with the characters established, and the movies owned by Marvel... they should get the same actors back again ;) Following that, I would set it up for a trilogy, so movie 1....

Cap, Thor, Tony, Ant-Man, Wasp and Hawkeye. Those are the six I would pick. Have the enemies be Baron Zemo and the Masters of Evil- allows for some group vs group action. This should introudce the group, set them up with Jarvis, the mansion, etc. It should be able to work as a stand alone movie just in case it flops. There shoudl be some foreshadowing; near the end Hank should be seen to be working on a robot. Wasp calls him or w/e, then he gets up and leaves... camera pans to show the bot with the word 'Ultron' on it....

Movie 2: Ultron as villain! Introduce Vision- via Ultron, of course, and also Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver (easy to do together) into the team.

Movie 3: Ah, the grand finale. With the team roster already nicely padded out I would either keep it as it was or else maybe throw in Ms Marvel or Wonder Man... For the third movie, there's only one candidate. Give us Kang. I know the price would be insane, but give us Kang and a full-scale all-out attack on Earth! Then I could die happy :P

Well, those would be my dream Avengers trilogy, with the perfect roster and their 3 biggest foes all in there. I would have liked to sneak in Count Nefaria somewhere- maybe movie 2, but I'm not sure he would work on the big screen. As opposed to the time-travelling alien blue guy. Ah, but Kang could work.... Nefaria and Ultron sharing a movie... naa....

People who were making the X-men movie have said they were told not to use Scarlet Witch or Quicksilver (even in cameos) because those two were Avenger characters.

Hopefully we get to see them pop up.

can't wait for the first big "marvel crossover event" movie. You'd have hugh jackman and toby mcguire running around in an avengers movie where they fight the hulk. Or something. Oh, this isn't sarcasim either, I think a big crossover deal would be awesome.

Here's some what-if casting for you. I based my choices on the Ultimate versions of the characters, and I tried to stick with relative unknowns and strong character actors. I also tried to stay away from actors who have already done comic book movies (except in the case of Loki, who's choice is beyond perfect). Here you go:

Steve Rogers/ Captain America - Ryan Phillipe (Crash, Gosford Park)

Nick Fury - Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, Unbreakable)

Tony Stark/ Iron Man - Karl Urban (The Lord of the Rings, The Bourne Supremacy)

Thor - Kevin Durand (The Butterfly Effect, Mystery Alaska)
