Theory time:
Ok, they had plot elements from previous films come together to form the conflict. Loki from Thor, the Cube from Captain America. So, they will probably do this for the others, using Thor 2, Captain America 2, Iron Man 3, and maybe Hulk, SHIELD, and GotG. Seems that Thanos is the next Avengers villain. So, who else thinks that the other movies will be about the Infinity Gems? I saw somebody say that the Spear Loki had was powered by the Mind Gem. So, maybe the Thor movie introduces another, say Soul, then Iron Man 3 can have something along the lines of the Mandarin seeking out the Power Gem. Then all the gems could come together for Avengers 2 for an adaption of the Infinity Gauntlet. Anyone else thinking this is what's gonna happen?
Serenity was fun but it wasn't the type of bold big budget thing that allows a creator to really lash out. I would like him to do a few more genre movies to see what he can do.

Thanos was after the tesseract/cosmic cube in the movie , i think what the other said at the beginning , Loki can have earth but with the tesseract , Thanos will have the universe. Think Loki only know a little of what the cube is fully capable of. Think the sequel might well be the avengers dealing with Thanos and the cosmic cube , taken from a bit of the storyline when thanos first had the cosmic cube.
The ending of thor 2 could show thanos stealing the cube from asgard.
That's also possible. However, I think that they may have played out the Cube's story. I think this was the end of the first chapter for the Avengers, and with it the end of the Cube. Also, I feel that the Infinity Gauntlet is the most well known Thanos story, making it a natural choice. They could justify it as simply saying that Asgard is out of his reach, so he's going after the Gems. And, the Gauntlet is more powerful then the Cube, anyway. Plus, they already have an Infinity Gauntlet prop.
The difference is , the tesseract/cosmic cube is a known quality to viewers having made it's appearance in 2 movies now , the infinity gauntlet is not , having to explain that to novice viewers would be tough and will take up a lot more time.
The tesseract is a more viable story in the movie sense. I don't think the cube story has been played out as we have yet to really see the fully realised power of the cube.

Some of you guys are way too eager to get Thanos out of the way! Drag his story out over five or more years. Put him in the back ground, as an unknown threat (to the heroes) that is behind a few ploys in the solo film.*
I still see him being more involved in Guardians of the Galaxy than the Avengers anyways.
It is now, because they spent time doing it. The Cube was unknown at first. The Gems aren't that complex. This one controls time, this one mind control, this one is a battery, this one eats souls. Put them together, you become God. They can build them up movie by movie, just as they did with the Cube.
Yeah, that's what I want. This shadowy force that is bringing these mysterious artifacts to the surface. It becomes a race, each of the Avengers has to find and contain these gems before they fall into the wrong hands. He can become this schemer, this guy who is just wrecking everything behind the scenes.
