    Writer of the Year

Grant Morrison, unquestionably. Seven Soldiers and All-Star Superman really cinch it.

    Artist of the Year

I'm gonna say Quitely, because I think it's important to recognize the fact that he's at such a high point now.

    Series of the Year

I'm bucking the trend and giving it to Optic Nerve, which put out it's best two issues last year, and really cemented Tomine's status as the leader of his pack.

Honorable mention to Tales Designed to Thrizzle, the funniest comic I have ever read.

    Best Mini[series or One Shot

I'm not finished with Seven Soldiers yet, so I can't rightfully nominate it. Solo had a few pretty awesome issues.

    And Best Moment.

My favorite series of the year was the Boys by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, which has been too often dismissed as an Ennis cliche ( hating on superheroes ), but is very well-structured, intriguing, and hilarious when you actually read it. This really does have the potential to out-Preacher Preacher.

My favorite one-shot of the year was Pride of Baghdad, an excellent piece of work that is timely right now, but will end up as timeless. Mark my words.

My favorite moment was Flycatcher's story in Fables: 1001 Nights of Snowfall. One of the most tragic things I've ever read in a comic book.

My favorite artist was Frank Quitely, who continues to do phenomenal work on All-Star Superman. I expect a retort of whining about how his faces are allegedly ugly.

My favorite writer was Richard Starkings, for starting the Elephantmen series and creating an incredibly compelling world of giant hippo/rhino/elephant people in a bleak urban setting.

    Default Hmm...

    Give me your:

    Writer of the Year

Warren Ellis, for managing to make so many different kinds of books -- Fell, Nextwave, and

    Artist of the Year

J.H. Williams III, for managing somewhere between ten and twelve distinctive, brilliant, and amazing art styles on the bookends for Seven Soldiers. I defy anyone to tell me the man isn't a genius.

He just edged out Frank Quitely's tremendously innovative work for me in terms of their projects from this last calendar year. Had We3 been an '06 book, I'd have given the nod to the pseudonymous super-artist.

    Series of the Year

Difficult toss-up between Fell and Nextwave. I'll say Fell here, for demonstrating how to tell serial stories that read brilliantly as one-offs or as chapters in a very sad novel.

    Best Miniseries or One Shot

    Seven Soldiers #1

    And Best Moment.

Detective Comics #824, the scene in which the Penguin's secret evil scheme turns out to be a plan to crassly market his own image via t-shirts, theme restaurants, and so forth. It was an unexpected and clever moment in character terms, and a nice bit of metacommentary in a story that didn't seem headed anywhere near such a beautifully cynical epiphany.

It has been a while but I couldn't agree more.

I'm a little bored today so I read even old posts one of these days
