This week at Comic Critics!: Sexual Harrisment
Hi everyone i'm new and trying to get into the DC world. Read my post in the main DC forums for the info. :)
The only Superman i've read is the Up, Up, and Away story and thought it was pretty cool. Now I see besides Superman/Action we have an All-Star book and a Confidential book.
I've seen most people love All-Star so i'm going to try that out but whats this Confidential about? Worth picking up? Also is the regular "Superman" good lately? Thanks!!
Superman Confidential covers Superman's early years as he encounters kryptonite for the first time. It hasn't been bad at all. Sale's art may not be for everyone though.
As for the Superman title, I thought it was decent until the new "Camelot Falls" arc, which I've really been enjoying. Art's improved dramatically as well.
All-star is out of continuity stories that draw heavily from the silver age.
Confidential are stories about superman's past eg first contact with kryptonite.
Regular "Superman" has been enjoyable lately. Generally, superman comics have been good recently with superman/batman probably being the weakest of the bunch.
All-Star Superman- Grant Morisson (yaaaaay!!) on out of continuity Supes stories...1 of the bestest books ever, but only bimonthly (if you're lucky)
Superman Confidential- Darwyn Cooke (yipee) on Supes early years, currently doing an early kryptonite story
Superman- Kurt Busiek (woo-hoo) doing a cool story featuring Arion and a possible post-apocoliptic future
Action- Geoff Johns and Richard Donner (cool) doing stuff fans of the movies likely love
Supergirl- a book with a shaky start, but has been getting better since Joe Kelly (hooray) started writing
Supergirl and the Legion of Super Heroes- Mark Waid (3 cheers) heads the latest version of the possible future (specifically the 31st century), which has had Kara visiting that time since IC
JLA- Superman heads the justice league, written by Brad (I loved Archers Quest, but did you HAVE to kill Sue Dibny??) Meltzer
JLA Classified-stories from various incarnations (past & present) of the justice league, rotating writers/artists for each arc
JLU-based on the cartoon
Krypto-"
Superman/Batman-I hate to say it, since I like his run on Superman and related stuff, but is getting better since Loeb left. Still seems like too serious a plot with Plastic Man though...

Pull List; seems to be too long to fit in my sig...
Well, I can't say anything more than what the guys have already told you, SuperKitty, other than welcome to the boards.
The Super-books are HIGHLY recommended right now.
SUPERMAN FOREVER!!!
... The Master Of Puppets has spoken.
Goodbye León (november 16th, 1993 - june 12th, 2009). You were, are and always will be the best friend I ever had. I will always love you and never forget you. And please, please forgive me.
Thank you for teaching me about love, patience and caring. Rest in Peace, my friend. I hope that wherever it is you are now, you can run and play as much as you want.
I have recently been introduced to the comic book world. Does anyone have any good ideas where I should start reading Superman? I was thinking about starting at The man of steel. Open to any suggestions.
The current runs of Superman are all spectacular right now. Three main titles to keep your eyes on: Superman, Action Comics, and All-Star Superman.
I recommend any of them really. They're all good, and all of them (with the exception of All-Star) are in current continuity.
Also, visit the DC website once in a while to see what's out/what's comming up.
All Star Superman is amongst the very finest Superman comics to be published in many, many years. I cannot recommend picking those issues up enough.
Currently, All Star Superman has only released six issues, so it'll be very easy to pick up and doesn't require you to know anything about Superman aside from the basics of his origin.
The Man of Steel is a bit dated by now (it was published in 1986), but if you enjoyed the Lois & Clark TV show, you'll probably like it. The show was based upon that interpretation of Superman.
Superman For All Seasons is more recent and was one of the inspirations for the Smallville TV show.
Try to get the superman up, up and away soft cover, Written by Kurt Busiek and Geoff Johns. It’s a good place to start, but I certainly agree with the other guys.
Superman, Action Comics and All Star Superman are three great reads at the moment.
I guess it depends on yourself. For me, I began in 1986 when everything was started anew. FYI, at that time there were 3 concurrently running comics: Action Comics (584), Adventures of Superman (424), and Superman (1). I gave you the '86 restart issue numbers.
The way I figure it, there's a lot of time for me to get caught up. :D
If you don't really care about reading from any starting point, just start anywhere. Maybe an issue or two will be a little hard to grasp (if you've walked into the middle of a story), but generally it won't take long to get back on track. I mean, comics are for kids, right? ;)
action and all star are the best i think,
you will get the back issue cheap on th shelves easy enuff, catch upo is easy and fast and enjoyable
I agree with everything said so far. I'll also add JLU and the old Superman Adventures books if you liked the cartoon, and For the Man Who has Everything, Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow, Dark Knight Returns, Crisis, Kingdom Come, Birthright, JLA: The Nail, Secret Identity, Action 775 and 800, Red Son, the Legends of the DCU issue that tells of Superman and Dick Graysons first meeting, the year 1 Superman annuals (1994 or '95 or '96), JLA Year 1, the Neil Gaiman Superman/GL special...the list of cool stuff goes on and on.
If you like The Man of Steel, alot of the Byrne/Wolfman books after that have been collected in tpb's recently. If you like All-Star Superman, you can look for Morrisons' run on Justice League (also in tpb), and Supes shows up in Mirrisons Animal Man (#4). If you like the older stuff, there's "The Greatest Superman Stories Ever Told" tpb, the Showcase collections, and Superman and Action #1 have been reprinted several times. If you like the Alan Moore stories I mentioned, Supes shows up in his and then Veitches Swamp Thing run, he and Swamp Thing team up in an issue of DC Comics Presents, And Moores' Supreme is based on Supes. If you wanna' see Supes beet Hulk and Thor, check out DC vs Marvel, and JLA/Avengers...the list can really go on and on...
Pull List; seems to be too long to fit in my sig...
