    Default Ultimate Personalities

I'm a big fan of the Ultimate series, it's more realistic and it really pulls you in. I think for the most part the personalites of the characters are pretty much true to how we know them, just with a little modern twist at times, which is nice. I like how true to the original character they made Wolverine but I do think it was a mistake to have him kill that child in issue, i think it was issue 41. We all know Wolverine that is something that character would NEVER do in any universe. He has killed a lot in his life but children! Nothing could make Wolverine kill a child and I think that was wrong of the writers to do that, he doesn't even seem sorry for it. I could even see the Ultimate Professor Xavier doing that by shutting off the kids mind or something though I know Wolverine did it without Xavier's knowledge. I know it's a stretch but Xavier has been known to do some pretty shady things in all the universes but Wolverine is someone who knows his dark side but treasures innocence above all else because it's something that he doesn't have so I really think it was a mistake for the writers to do that. What do all of you think?

616 Wolverine: trained killer mumbo jumbo extravaganza samurai ninja mutant.
Ultimate Wolverine: trained killer mumbo jumbo extravaganza mutant.

I think it'd be out of character for Wolverine to refrain from killing anything, actually. He's a soldier, so he does what he's told to do. He killed that kid for the good of all mutanthood (and on orders from Nicky). Kid wouldn't have had much of a life anyway so Wolvie did him a favour. Even bought the little sod a beer.

Course, Wolverine would probably need a reason to gut a kid. Probably. Don't quote me on it.

Ultimate Wolverine is supposed to be less honorable and compassionate than his 616 counterpart. When they interviewed the guy who's writing the Ultimate Wolverine miniseries (Jeph Loeb? Or am I remembering wrong?), he mentioned that Ultimate Wolverine could kill all the X-men while 616 Wolverine would probably find a way to kill himself before he did so. Something along those lines.

I mean, we're talking about a guy who threw a wounded man to his death just so he could get at his girlfriend.

Yeah you're right i can't argue that the Ultimate Wolverine is less honorable but killing a child, that's something I don't think a Wolverine from any universe would do. He's ruthless, he's messed up, but he's still a hero and after all the terrible things he's done, the way he feels about the things he's done, i can't remember the issue number but you know the one where he asks spiderman for help when people are chaing him? In that issue he makes it clear how he feels about the terrible things he's done, after expressing all that I fnd it hard to believe that he would be capable of killing a child. I mean I know these aren't real people sometimes I get a little carried away but I just think it was really inconsistant of the writers to have Wolverine do that, it wasn't true to his character in my opinion.

I think it was totally true to his character in either universe, honestly. It was a mercy killing. That kid would have to live the rest of his life in isolation with the deaths of his family, friends and entire neighborhood on his conscience.

616 Wolverine would probably have done the same (but he might've tried getting Xavier or Reed Richards to help first), but for Ultimate Wolverine (who is much more of a bastard) this was totally in character IMO.

I honestly thought that that issue, while brief, was one of the best Ultimate X-men issues ever.

I also think that killing the kid wasn't so out of character for Ult Wolverine. A lot of people criticize the writers for not making the Ult and 616 Wolverines differnet enough. I think that the Ult Wolverine is different from the 616 Wolverine because he is still really raw and untamed. The 616 Wolverine has become really tame and goody goody over the years. I think that they are different and that there are many other differences that are just more subtle.

I think it was completely in his character to kill the kid. Remember he tried to kill Scott. I don't remember his exact age but most of society would consider nearly all the Ultimate X-Men children.

Ultimate Wolverine was scum when he first showed up and I really liked that. I have no problem with him killing the kid because it really was a mercy killing. I consider that to be the best issue of UXM.

In the end I think the biggest problem with UW is he is being written out of character because they are dulling all the edge the character had. He has morphed more into 616 Wolverine to the point where he is even shrinking in height. I’d rather read about the assassin and more uncaring Wolverine that we originally got in UXM.
