Default Spider-Man's New Rogues Gallery (JMS, PAD and beyond)

Going over the entire JMS run as well as the more current issues, I think JMS and crew don't get enough credit for creating new villains for Spider-Man to face. Even during "The Other" there were still 3 new villains being created or used at the time. Just to save some time I used some of Spiderfan.org information so thanks to them for it but here they are:

    Name: Charlie "Vibranium Man" Weiderman

Powers: Covered in a mixture of vibranium and a porous breathable alloy, it gives him super strength, durability, and the ability to vibrate through the hardest of substances.

    Appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #515-518

Name: Digger a.k.a Freddie Carnevale, Santo Castellani, Jimmy "Little Man" Desanti, Louis Fredone, Tony Mascapone, George Sims, and seven other unnamed mobsters

Powers: A collective consciousness of 13 dead mob bosses in one mixed with gamma radiation gives Digger superhuman strength and durability although deteriorated after exccess fatigue.

    Appearance:
    Amazing Spider-Man #51-54

    Name: Shathra

Powers: Flight, super strength, high durability, projectile poison.

    Appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #46-48

    Name: Morlun

Powers: Able to absorb totemistic energies thereby enhancing his strength, stamina, and speed. Also able to track down his prey no matter what the distance. A mix of Morbius the living vampire with Sebastion Shaw if you will.

    Appearances: Amazing Spider-Man #30-35, 525-528, FNS #1-3, MK Spider-Man #19, 20, 22

I'll add in some of the bio's but there are a few more I'd like to post. These villains in particular are very cool in that Charlie and Digger were created by more scientific means while Morlun and Shathra were more mystical in origin. Next up, Grey Goblin, Sarah Stacy, Dr. Carlyle a.k.a Doc Ock imitator, Ezekiel, Tracer, Ms. Arrow.

One thing is that the majority were one-off villains.

Still I think a few have potential to appear in later stories.

Morlun) The idea of a villain who kills superheroes is compelling. He's died twice, but given how they never explained his first rebirth, I'm sure we'll see more of him soon.

Fusion) He hates Spider-Man more than any other villain, and he has a lot of wealth. His powers also make him dangerous. I'm surprised no one's used him since Jenkins.

Wiedermann) He does have a relationship with Peter Parker. His powers aren't unique, and I doubt he'll ever rise to A-list status, but we may get good stories out of him.

Mac Gargan Venom) Mac Gargan + alien symbiote = two of the great Spider-Man villains becoming more dangerous.

    Didn't Doctor Octopus kill him?

Not that that's a dealbreaker, but someone's gonna have to want to bring him back enough that they'll be willing to think up a resurrection for him.

For the minor part he played in The Other, I thought Tracer was pretty neat. There's potential in him.

Great thread, Will! I'll lend a hand with a few names you didn't mention as coming up.

    Appearances: Amazing Spider-Man #40-42 (#481-483)

    Name: Shaker

Powers: Suit gives him vibrational powers and enhanced strength.

    Appearances: Amazing Spider-Man #501

    Name: Gatekeeper

Powers: Appears to be a purely mental being who can control any and all spiders, and use them to create a body (like Swarm).

    Appearances: Amazing Spider-Man #506-507

    Name: El Dorado

Powers: Magical powers include the ability to summon swords and golden armor swords, and increase his strength.

    Appearances: Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #6-7

I think JMS would get more credit for this if he didn't kill off most of his villains in the same story he introduces them in.

Although Millar doesn't get enough credit for the Venom/Scorpion thing. Stroke of genius that was IMO.

And Fusion lives. Spidey managed to get an ambulance there on time.

That's true, but I think Shathra and Morlun are going to be returning in the future. They can always have another villain return Charlie to his vibranium state and Digger can be put together just in case but that stuff is beyond their control.

I agree about Fusion, we should see more of him considering how powerful he is and his costume isn't too shabby.

    Continuing on:

    Name: Gabriel "Grey Goblin" Stacy

Powers: Same powers as his father the Green Goblin. Later adopted the identity the "Grey Goblin" and equipped himself with the same arsenel as the Green Goblin including razorbats, the glider and glider missles.

Appearance: #509-514 "Sins Past", Spectacular Spider-Man #23-26 "Sins Remembered"

    Name: Sarah Stacy

Powers: With the enhanced version of the GG formula running through her, she has the same powers as her brother Gabriel and her father Norman.

Appearance: #509-514 "Sins Past", Spectacular Spider-Man #23-26 "Sins Remembered"

    Name: Ezekiel

Powers: Same powers of Spider-Man including adhering to walls, super strength, and reflexes.

    Name: Dr. Carlyle

Powers: Enhanced cybernetic suit based on Doctor Octopus's own set of tentacle arms. It's equipped with six arms, tendrils and blast guns.

    Appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #43-45

Ahh thanks Sean, you have some good ones I was going to list later.

I didn't know Shade was a new character though, for some reason I had thought he was created before. Shaker made for some good fodder along the lines of Shocker, and El Dorado was very fun and cool and then there's Hobgoblin 2211 with her alternate reality wackiness.

Peter David's own creations (or co-creations)

Sean put this one up already but just a full face picture of El Dorado:

Name: Ms. Arrow a.k.a "The Other"

Powers: As a collective of pirate spiders; super strength and amorphous body. Also sports a pair of stingers similar to Spider-Man.

    Appearances: FNS #4, #11-13, MK Spider-Man #22

    Name: Tracer

Powers: Part robot shell, part nanotechnology. Can control any machine and uses a gun that fires special "smart bullets".

Name: Robin Borne a.k.a Hobgoblin 2211

Powers: Infected by a technological nanovirus that drove her insane, it gave her enhanced strength and agility. Robin wears an exosuit that contain weapons such as retcon bombs and a glider that has both a lasso coil and exhaust containing nano-machines capable of taking control of mechanical suits such as the Iron Spider costume.

Fusion is not dead. Last we saw him Doctor Octopus had beaten the holy hell out of him, and Spider-Man called an ambulance for Fusion.

So there's no need for a resurrection. Any writer who wants to use Fusion just needs to come up with a way someone with the powers of autosuggestion can break out of a prison hospital.

I liked him better when he was called Molten Man. :D

Seriously, though, I think Fusion and Tracer can both be effective recurring rogues and I found Digger to be a fun villain, too (did he die at the end of his story? I don't recall). I absolutely loathe the "Stacy twins" and think both they and the magic-themed villains will only get used by JMS or those wanting to somehow make reference to/follow up on "Sins Past" or the mysticism element. I am fairly interested in how Gargan-as-Venom gets used as a pure Spidey rogue, compared to being a member of the new Thunderbolts.

I want this guy to return sometime soon. They need to use Tracer more.

Tracer and Fushion I think are the best of the new group. I'd rather not see the twins or the mystic enemies return again.

Without a doubt Tracer, Morlun and The Other are the best new villains that have been around recently. I'm interested in this Fusion guy. What series and issues was he in? I don't know why but I've got a feeling Tracer will return sometime in the #20's of "Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man".

Errr...isn't Ms. Arrow being 'The Other' just pure speculation at this point?
I didn't think that it had actually been varified yet?

    Am I wrong?

No, I'm sure he survived... he was beaten nearly to death though. It kind of took away from his heat.
