    Default Robin #157 - [spoilers]

'Things That Go Bump In the Night'

Adam Beechen writes. Frazer Irving on art.

I was so glad to see Frazer Irving's art in this issue. The story was OK. It appears that the magick used in the Horigal spell (see the Klarion mini-series) has somehow leaked into Gotham. There's a bird-raccoon-snake-dog-squirrel-turtle running amok in the alleys while Robin "saves" Teekel from a tree.

Art - A+ Loved it in Klarion, love it here.

Writing - B- Not great, not bad.

    Solid B across the board.

So which Klarion is this, the Seven Soldiers one or the one from before?

According to Morrison, the one from before.
'The marquis. Well, you know, to be honest, he seems a little bit dodgy to me.'
'Mm,' she agreed. 'He's a little bit dodgy in the same way that rats are a little bit covered in fur."

No, I'm pretty sure that this Klarion is completely new.

Did the old Klarion just fizzle out like a bad fart? What happened? Retcon punch?

So it is not the far superior 7 Soldiers Klarion.

No. This IS the 7 Soldiers Klarion. They even have the same artist that illustrated the Klarion mini-series (Frazer Irving) illustrating this issue and the next.

It appears to be the Seven Soldiers Klarion, though not necessarily well-written. Though perhaps the next issue will display a better handle on the character, since he didn't really appear until the end of this one.

    Flipped through it.

Was kinda annoyed at Tim not knowing when the last time he dated a 'normal' girl.

Even if you discount Steph because she was a Cape, what about Arianna? I'm sure that they could have changed the dialogue a bit to mention her. Lord knows she hasn't been mentioned in years.

If the writer of the 7 Soldiers Klarion series says that the one in Robin ignores the newer characterisation and uses the lamer old version, I am inclined to take his word for it.

Unless Grant Morrison made the statement after reading the script for Robin #158 (which isn't out yet), the verdict's still out on that one.

Your quote from Morrison only states that he has low expectations for his versions of the characters.

"Klarion already seems barely recognizable and appears to have returned to his role (a role no-one could ever sell in the first place) as a teen warlock who turns up to fight DCs younger characters - a sort of Goth Mr. Myxyzptlk. I hope Beechen proves you wrong too Grant. I'd hate to see them do to 7 Soldiers what they did to New X-Men.

Grant might have seen the script. He's enough of an A-lister that he might have access to stuff as needed.

Either way, given the general reaming Batgirl got under Beechen's pen, I can understand his concern.

I liked Robin, and Klarion didn't even appear enough to find out what version it is. I thought it was funny though with all the effort he put into saving the cat. Also the art was great.
