I've read about everyone but SRW over the years. I still think Gardner was a bit too hung up on the ritual, and not on the faith, but it's a stylistic difference I think.

For him, faith seemed expressed through ritual, at least earlier on. That's why I'll suggest his other contemporaries and those who further developed the religion after he set down the core rules.
