oh, trust me, I am familiar with the crap said during that time but i will tell you this... I did what I thought needed to be done and that is draw attention to something so many others were trying to pretend did not happen. What people inferred from my opinion column was on thier own. and putting FOL in jeopardy? I am sorry but working towards helping women in this industry SHOULD be what Friends of Lulu is all about.

As a poor shmuck who makes his living day to day toiling in the hot business of Asphalt work , I always dreamed of starting a comics company. Now how could I do it knowing I don't know jack shit about the industry beyond picking up my weekly comics and going " Geoff Johns GOOOOOOODDD " and " Jud Winick HHHHIIIISSSSS " .

Now as someone who dreams of one day hitting that Powerball Lotto Jackpot ( last check past 100 million ) I've always dreamed of starting a comics imprint or company. Putting my new millions behind it and signing some names to kick ass. Who actually know the business so I'll look smart perhaps.

But the thing is I'd be foolish to start a company and think I could become the walking incarnation of Stan Lee and Marvel from the 1960's. Or proclaim that I'll be an awesome writer since Gail Simone , Mark Waid and Kurt Busiek reply to my posts.

Right now I'm a content human being a virtual no name CBR Poster with my delusions of hitting millions possibly tomorrow. But I'll be a virtual no name CBR poster who realizes the things he can't possibly do at the moment . ;)

Hey, my heart and admiration go out to anyone who self-publishes. They are the eyes and soul of the industry in my opinion and they often risk everything they have. I can't tell you how many mini-comics and webcomics I've read recently that I've truly loved. You don't have to have millions to make it happen, Karen Ellis here is a perfect example of someone who produces a fantastic read without having to create a big comics company first.

It's just that when you publish, or have an intent to publish, you have to be honest with the people you bring into it. That's where Rick Olney completely and utterly failed...he didn't even keep in regular communication. There's no excuse for that.

1) Gail USED to use a pseudonym — but every time someone found out 'G-Bolt' was in town, she got MOBBED. Mobbed, I tell you. Even the shades didn't help. To avoid similar scenes, she started using 'Michael Eisner', but found that caused the reverse problem. I have no clue what pseudonym she uses now, because those of us who really dig her just call her 'Babs'.

2) It's true. Kurt Busiek is a lovely man.

3) Comics is WAY too small a business for NDA's to work even in THEORY, much less in PRACTICE. I mean, good for him for trying, but c'mon. Making everything going on with a company (good and bad) public knowledge builds trust when things are going well; but it builds even MORE trust when things are going badly.

4) I should point out I'm suing Cully Hamner. I don't owe him money, and the extent of our working relationship is limited to drawing on a chick's legs at a Heroes Con (with her fiance's permission, and with twenty other artists), but dammit, I LIKE Cully, and we haven't had a chance to chat in years, so I figure a lawsuit to get us in a room together makes sense. Or at a con. Either way, it's all out of LOVE.

5) Jack popping in (hi, Jack!) reminded me that although Conley's a friend, and Rick Veitch could have a kidney if he asked me, I left Comicon as an exhibitor or even as a poster because of some uncomfortable exchanges I had regarding a charity request from ORCA. Make of that what you will.

Does anybody else here find it ironic (in an Alanis Morissette way) that the only person we know that Olney did eventually pay is.... Gail? And it's her thread on her section of CBR that all this is coming from?

Yep, but again, he only paid a partial reimbursement of my out of pocket expenses. After two years of his bullshit, I told him to keep the remainder.

I don't want or expect him to pay the balance. When Chuck Dixon came forward to mention how Olney had shafted him, I voiced my support (I'd otherwise happily ignored the little man) and that's when he lost his not-very-held-together-in-the-first-place composure.

So it's not about me, I just want him to pay the people he owes. He could STILL man-up enough to say, "Okay, I'm in trouble here and I need to make a payment plan" and I think almost everyone he's shafted would go for that AND it would do a lot to clear his name.

Well, I for one knew the ICC had Olney backing from the get go, I didn't think that was a secret either. But that really doesn't matter. If you want to dig in and keep the initial work intact, I'm not gonna say don't do it...I think you indeed should. I was just trying to shine light on options.

I hope we can do some joint SPA/ICC projects.
