Default How important is a cooling system for the Xbox 360?

The girl at my video game shop recommended I get one of those cooling fan attatchments for the back of my Xbox 360. Is it really necessary? Are 360s prone to overheating?

Any advice here would be appreciated.

I've read reports that the Nyko Intercooler creates rather than fixes heating problems, might want to avoid that.

Personally, I think as long as the 360's vents aren't obstructed and no unusual heat sources are around, it should be fine.

The earlier models had trouble. Newer ones, not as much.

Headhunter is right about the Nyko causing more problems than it solves. It draws on the 360's power supply, and can apparently create more heat, to the point of scorching the plastic on the inside of the case. Bad, bad stuff.

She reccomended it because its a extra sale for them and that is it.

    You do not need one.

Long as your house isnt a inferno, you put the console on a heating duct or put it on shag carpet youll be fine. Mine sits on top of a table with some space on all side and its never overheated, even when I feel alseep playing one night and it ran for like 8 hours. Hell I beat dead rising from start to finish and had no problems and I heard some rumors of how the game put so much pressure on the cpu it overheats, bullcrap.

Ever since the first ps1 systems where sony put heat vents on the bottom without considering if its on carpet they would be blocked everyone says system overheat and such. I never had a system overheat. Xbox was the funniest, I actually heard a guy in a gamestop telling a customer to buy a ps2 because the xbox are known for overheating and catching on fire.

As a former video game store employee, I insist that you never ever do anything a game store employee reccommends.

I think I'm safe, though, as I no longer work there.

No problems with heat from mine. I keep it in the open.

I think most people that had any real trouble from heat pushed it out of the way in some TV cabinet or something. I think a lot of people that moved up to the 360 were console people and not PC people and heat wasn't that big of an issue with the older consoles.

The cooling fan is Nyko's way of cashing in on the mass hysteria of overheated Xbox 360s.
