First app of HELLBOY

ALright, this is my first post, sorry if this has been talked about to death, but i wanted to know, when did HELLBOY first come out? I know there are two books, san diego comic con 2 and JBNM 21, which is the real deal? Now, im guessing SDCC came out first, but that was a preview right? Was JBNM the first in story? Please let me know, thanks

As far as I know, the comic con version was the original "Hellboy" sketch, whereas John Byrnes Next Men was the original published "Hellboy" as we know and love today...

It's SDCCC #2 for the first comic appearance-- I recall Scott Allie (Dark Horse's Hellboy editor) had a bear of a time (in the late 90's) getting some comic guides corrected.*

Also, check out the SOD tpb (I think it's page 113?)-- to see the note "More First Things."

(Hahahahha, does anyone remember the "Hellboy Junior Lurid Easter Special" that was listed for like, two years in some guides) :)

BTW, the Hellboy Junior Lurid Easter Special was not published-- I still get readers askin' where they can find this. (The intended stories were published as HELLBOY JUNIOR #1 and #2)

SDCCC #2:

It includes a 4-page story, "Mike Mignola's Hellboy," which has Hellboy fighting Anubis.
(The story was reprinted in the SOD Hardcover and TPBs.)

When I referenced page 113(?) of the SOD tpb-- it's a small summary of Hellboy firsts. I don't have the TPB handy while I am travelling for the holidays.

I remember Wizard magazine had a little box about it in one of their issues a couple of years ago about the SDCC being a "preview" and that's why they didn't count it as Hellboy's first appearance.

Of course, I think their answer might have translated to "We don't want to admit we are wrong..."
