That's a bit daft. What does he think Microsoft is?"The appointment of Hirai could be the start of a shift from hardware to software," said Sakurai. "I cannot now imagine a PlayStation 4." According to the Financial Times, Sakurai's reasoning is that "Hirai's new global portfolio puts a predominantly software-focused manager in charge of the company." His logic is reportedly that, with the emphasis moving to software, Sony would go the way of Sega, transforming from a console maker to a mere game publisher.

I've learned this from following wrestling and it probably applies here: pretty much anything you ever here from someone in Japan is bull because people outside of Japan like to repeat the most sensationalist stuff without being savvy to the varacity or respectibility of the source.
Somehow, I doubt Sony is going to stop this juggernaut.

Huge overreaction. While I do wonder if Kutaragi is being respectfully booted out of his role as the man behind the Playstation, that doesn't mean Sony is suddenly dropping the franchise. Sony's been going through a lot of corporate shuffling, hoping to reverse the common perception that they've lost their touch.
Even if I feel they have, I think it's pretty silly to say there won't be a PS4. Hell I've been listening to people predict Nintendo's demise for how long now?
Botching the PS3 launch and comparatively poor PSP sales appear to be the prevailing reasons.Originally Posted by Sanagi

Buddy of mine works for EB...so many people have been bringing there's back. Loads of problems and issues with processors overheating and the backwards compatability not working right.
He bought one two days ago to sell on Ebay, but then took it back because nobody was buying them as much and they were only going for around 800 bucks.
And expensive blu ray discs for games?
It is a failing system for Sony. However, I wish them well and hope that they don't leave the console industry.

MS had similar launch problems with the 360, but the advantage they had was they were all by themselves in the next-gen market. The PS3 not only has to contend with the 360, but the Wii is a major heavy-hitter also. Supply on the PS3 is so low that every returned defective unit means another Wii or 360 sale since you can't realistically get a replacement unit for the PS3, and the holidays are just around the corner.
As far as I'm concerned, the PS3 launch is an unmitigated disaster, and this can only help to level the playing field as MS and Nintendo continue to build marketshare over the next 12 months...there'll be PS3 supply problems until 2008, I think.
There WILL be a PS4. I'm sure of that. However, neither the PS3 nor the PS4 will see the dominance that the PS2 saw in the market. I believe the gaming market will be divided up between the 3 major companies more evenly this time.
