Default ONSLAUGHT REBORN #1 Review!! and synopsis, SPOILERS!!

    ONSLAUGHT REBORN#1
    Writer: Jeph Loeb
    Artist: Rob Liefeld
    Colorist:Matt Yackey

The Review (keep scrolling down for an almost complete synopsis, don’t worry I didn’t spoil the end!)

    The Positives!
    Writing

I’ll tell you what, I agree with a buddy of mine who said the same thing over on the www.robliefeld.net message boards, When I was reading this book, I could hear the things voice the whole time, Loeb certainly has a knack for writing this character like I havnt seen since Stan Lee himself. And that’s how I felt while reading these stories, for the first time in a LONG time, I actually felt like THIS was the Fantastic Four that I grew to know and Love growing up. It really felt like the characters, it really felt like a Classic Marvel Epic told in a new way. If this is a sign of the level books Loeb is going to put out while at Marvel, then were in for a rollercoaster of fun and adventure. Fast paced action, great characterization, clever dialogue, and a great premise, you can go wrong with this book.
    The ART
Rob Liefeld at his best! You know how Kirkman compared Liefeld to Kirby in that issue of Marvel Spotlight? Well let the comparisons continue to be drawn. This book felt like reading a Kirby book. From the opening splash page to the cliffhanger at the end, Liefeld executed the story perfectly, Clear story telling, fast paced action scenes that leaves you wanting more. And the colors by Matt Yackey are Bright and Vibrant, Lending to the classic Marvel feel with a modern edge.

    The Negatives
Few and far between to tell the truth the only honest critique for this book that I could come up with is the paper stock. Marvel has improved since the 90’s but the paper they use now is a kind of fake glossy stock, the ink rubs off on the fingers and the pages warp a little in heat, light shines off of the pages at weird angles, this is true for ALL marvel comics though, so its more a general complaint.

In closing I give this book an A+ Highest possible recommendation, go out and get it!

    Synopsis (SPOILERS)
The comic opens with a powerful splash page, Just like Stan and Jack wouldve done it, the Scarlet Witch mouthing the words No More Mutants! ala house of M. Then there is a quick recap of the events of house of M, and two page splash of Xavier and Magneto fighting, the two men who when combined create the being known as ONSLAUGHT! (We are joined through this recap by a narrative voice who is later revealed as the female bucky from the Heroes Reborn universe.) Enough with the pleasantries from this point on the action picks up and the story really takes off.
A bright Light in the heavens cascades down towards the earth and erupts into the ground with a furious explosion, ONSLAUGHT Emerges from the rubble looking viscious and he wants Revenge. Right off the bat Loeb makes its clear as crystal what this series is about, Onslaught has been reborn in the aftermath of House of M and he wants to kill Franklin Richards!
BOOM! Franklins running through the negative Zone, and who pursuing him, none other then Blastaar the living Bomb-Burst! Thing comes in for the save and jacks Blastaar in the jaw, The lights go out, the simulation ends, It was a virtual reality video game that reed invented. But somethings going down and Ben Grimm aint in the mood to take any crap. Johnny storm Flies in on the attack, obviously Possessed by some crazy force, Ben gets Franklin to safety and we get treated to 7 Pages, that’s right count em a 7 page bombastic fight scene between a possessed human torch and the thing. And you gotta check it out to see johnnies new power, FIRE VISION! Dope, that’s all I gotta say about that.

Now its reed and sues turn, onslaughts using anyone he can get his hands on and now Reed is possessed and attacking Franklin, Sue comes in for the save!

Franklin escapes to another universe, and Onslaught follows, Thing and Reed, who is now himself again, get there a little too late.

And its not OVER YET!! I don’t want to give away the last two pages, Its just too good! All I gotta say is, the female bucky from the HR universe, is going to play a HUGE role in this series and the this book ends on an EPIC cliffhanger, the likes of which only a true Marvel comic can provide!

Yeah, this guy has been producing endless Liefeld-boosting threads to try and get people to buy this book for months over on Millarworld. I think the moderators eventually ordered him to stop.

The poster sounds like a desperate salesperson. I find it hard to believe that Onslaught Reborn could be as good as he's making it out to be.

Memo - writers, stop using holodeck scenes. They're cheap.

This was.. certainly Loeb and Liefeld. I don't think it'll change anyone's mind.

    That's Counter Earth.

I'm confused I thought HR was turned into the current Counter Earth, but apparantly its Counter Earth which is a totally different thing.

The Heroes Reborn planet was pretty much destroyed in Exiles recently wasn't it?

Yeah, wasn't there a worldwide flood or some such?

I suppose, theoretically, he could travel to an alternate reality that also has a Counter Earth, but why would he need to considering 616 has one and he didn't create whichever one he must be going to?

Eh, wasn't bad. Probably the best Liefeld art in a long time.

The HR/Counter Earth thing irked me to until I realised that if Cap, the FF and co are appearing (and they appear to be HR versions of them) then this is either HR Earth in the past or an alternate HR Earth. So I just ignored it.

As for Franklin's powers, maybe they were reactivated temporarily due to Onslaught's appearance.

    Yeah...that's the ticket.

Heh, that sums the issue up pretty well. Also echoes my thoughts on it.

BTW, is that quote in your avatar from the Red Skull?

Proteus raised Atlantis and killed off all its people, causing some massive flooding, but that's pretty much par for the course for Counter Earth (it's dealt with all kinds of holocausts post-HR and its entry into the 616-verse). CE-New York has been mostly flooded since Heroes Reborn: Doom, and that's the area that was shown in Exiles. C-E is still pretty much a viable entity (I really wish Marvel would do more with it; it's a great excuse to run some "Elseworlds" types of stories while not having to create an entirely new continuity for them.)

Am I the only dude that was disgusted by the fact that Rob Liefields artwork hasn't changed since 91'?? I took this book right back to the book store and traded it in for a piece of doodoo. The doodoo was better than this book. Onslaught Reborn?? More like Liefields Attempt to Be Reborn.
