Picked this up yesterday and couldn't wait to read The Lion and the Hydra! Mike's in his usual element here and the story itself really sings. Personally (and I'm sure I've said this before, so please pardon the rehash), I think Mike is at his best with shorter stories. Granted, I've thoroughly enjoyed the series of longer length also, but with a shorter story he's forced to get his point across quickly- almost like a daily cartoon strip. Either the 'joke' works or it doesn't, and in this case I bought the whole thing lock, stock, and barrel.

    *SPOILER ALERT*

The last page seemed to me to be almost a gentle nudge and wink at the Messageboard fans who incessently pick apart Mike's stories for hidden meaning. I'm guilty of it also, so I'm not trying to sit in my ivory tower by any means. It's just not something I've seen Mike do a whole lot of (examine the meaning of a story this closely and almost for yucks). The reader is usually left to glean their own meaning, but here Mike pretty much lays it out.

I guess now fans won't have to guess what Mike meant, they'll know.

I am going to check my local shop to see if they got any in.

I've liked all the "Dark Horse Book of" Hellboy stories that have been out so far.

I do agree with you Stygian, I like the short stories better (the long ones are great, too). Whenever I recommend a trade paperback to someone unfamiliar with Hellboy I suggest "Right Hand of Doom."

I would definitely agree as well, as far as finding the shorts a bit stronger than the longer stories/ mini's ("Third Wish", 'Corpse', the one in 'Hauntings' that I can't remember the name of right now).

How long is Mignola's entry in 'Monsters'?

I'm guessing around 10-11 pages. It's not that long, but it packs a nice punch.
