    Question DC Bicentennial Comics

I was looking at a DC comic from 1976 and I noticed a number in the upper right corner. See scan.

Does anyone remember what these numbers were for? Was it some kind of contest?

There was indeed a contest.I believe the prize was a bicentennial belt buckle.

By an odd coincidence, I was looking through my copy of Brave and the Bold #128 last night, and I noticed the same thing.

According to an ad in that issue, there were 33 issues whose covers had the Bicentennial banner (i.e. the words "DC Comics Salutes the Bicentennial" appearing above the logo). You were supposed to cut off the tops of at least 25 of those covers, and send them in to DC. If you did this by July 4, 1976, you would receive "a metal Superman belt buckle! (in antiqued silver finish!)".

You can see most or all of the 33 Bicentennial covers at Mike's Amazing World.

I wonder if, as a result of this promotion, these 33 issues are unusually hard to find in good condition. I only have two of them, although this could just be because my '70s DC collection is rather weak.

And to think I am asham,ed to have a mere ten of these Bronze Age Beauties!

There are about a dozen more I'd like, but I only seriously miss the Adventure and Weird Western issues.
