    Default original costume

my friend and i recently got into an argument about what spidermans original costume was. for some reason i recall my brother having a comic book quite some time ago where peter parker originally had a black costume and somehow he manged to lose it to venom and thats where venoms costume came from. is spidermans original costume the blue/red? and if it isn't can someone prove w/ evidence that his original costume was something different? maybe someone can also clear up my confusion as to why i recall peter parker wearing a black costume in some very old comics.

    any responses are apreciated.

Yes,the red and blue is Spidey's original costume,as seen here in his premier apearance.

    And(on this topic,atleast) you're not nuts,he wore a black costume,which he didn't LOSE to Venom,technically.The costume WAS Venom.Or part of him.
It was an intelligent alien life-form that would sort of sleuce onto Pete's body and produced it's own webs.At one point,it forcibly tried to bond itself to Peter,at which point it was forcibly removed by Mr.Fantastic of the Fantastic Four.
The Symbiote,as it was now called, escaped and bonded successfully to Eddy Brock,a rival of Peter Parker's,and they became Venom.
    Hope that clears it up!

Beautifully drawn by Jack Kirby in Spidey's premier cover. However a "web mask" and some old play clothes were Spidey's first actual costume when he took on Crusher Hogan in that same issue.

But not to confuse the issue, for all practical purposes shadow of a madman is correct.

Spidey has worn several costumes over the years, it would be interesting to see a gallery of "the many costumes of Spider-Man".

Nice synopsis on the Vemon/Black costume saga by the way.

    Steve Dikto, not Jack Kirby.

Yes, there's a TPB out there.
I see it quite frequently in one of the local comicbook stores, next to the COIE TPB.

That's right. And what we think of as Spider-Man's classic costume is basically how John Romita drew the character. The Steve Ditko costume was slightly different. IIRC, Spider-Man's original Ditko costume was recently used in Milligan and Allred's "X-Force".

I can't argue that with you, but I will say that there is a very big difference between early Ditko Spider-man & Spidey at the end of his run. Steve's style changed, Spider-man filled out more and was less "quirky" looking by issue 38 In fact there isn't that big of a difference between late Ditko & early Romita (John was apparently trying to ghost Steve). Ironically though I see a much bigger difference not between Steve & John's Spider-man, but more so between Their Peter Parkers & supporting cast, especially MaryJane.

Either way though they were/are both genius artists & unquestionably the two best artists ever to draw Spider-man.

The biggest changes to the Klassic Kostume actually came in the 80s - some time before the Secret Wars, the chest symbol changed shape, so the legs went from horizontal & together to splayed, and it stayed that way. McFarlane then later introduced the Huge eyes, which have gone back & forth since.
