I nominate Dragon Ball Z. Apologies if I already did a Most Hyped Anime thread (I can't remember if I did Most Hyped or Worst Anime, or either...).

Gundam.
Any encarnation of it.
Also, Naruto.
I've never understood the appeal of Evangelion. There's only one character in that whole series that is likeabl and it's a penquin.
*sigh* True true.
Biru-no tanima-no kurayami-ni, Supaida-man!
Havok was right.
I know a number of series I like are overhyped, but I still like some of them.
DBZ. Certainly. I saw some of it, a good 50 eps, thanks to my roomate and I liked it. Though I didn't really have interest to watch it all.
Then.. I dunno.. Maybe Gundam Wing? Though that is my favorite and the only good one I saw all the eps of. (I'm ignoring G Gundam.)
Then Evangelion. I love it like a second religion, but it is overhyped.
Cowboy Bebop definately took its seat on the overhyped throne. I love the series, but I must admit it did get overhyped. Not that it stopped me from going to NYC to see the US movie premeire and meet the director, character designer, and Yoko Kanno.
Maybe Trigun earned an overhyped position. After reading the manga, I certainly wish more people would check that out. As amazing as the series was, the manga just does so much more.
Naruto then became this giant overyped mass. I remember even when it was fansubbed it was the big thing. I think a good way to gauge it, at least nowadays, is to see what everyone's cosplaying as at cons. I heard it from a diehard fan friend.. er.. aquaitence that read the manga. Then I started to watch it with friends over at the MIT anime club. Yet I never got into it. Though I liked the Gamecube game and Rock Lee.
Acutally, I really like One Piece, yet that just never seemed to reach the hype and fandom that Naruto did. Well, at least in America.
I think Bleach is set to become the next overhyped anime to bump Naruto off that throne. Though I rather like what I've seen of Bleach much more than Naruto. A group from one of the anime clubs at my college did Naruto one year then did Bleach a year or two later. Plus now they've lost interest in Naruto and are into Bleach.
Oh duh. Fullmetal Alchemist. That was the big overhyped series that between Bleach and Naruto. I really liked that one. Of course, not that these series don't deserve hype or even a lot of hype, but there are some series that just get blown out of proportion no matter how good they are.
Oh yeah, Gravitation I see a lot at cons. Or rather I hear the fangirls screaming their lungs out about it. Yes, two guys are kissing. GET OVER IT.
Then there's the opposite end of the spectrum. Others I like are really cult favorites and that's pretty fun to have this small group of people into this obscure series you like. I know there's an all too small following for Blame! and Tsutomu Nihei. Angel's Egg is rather obscure. JoJo seems to have only a small following in America despite its popularity in Japan.

Gantz
Bleach
Full Metal Alchemist
Naruto
Inuyasha
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Gundam
One Piece
Prince of Tennis
Trigun
There are lots more that are overhyped.
Of course, Gantz is an interesting choice. It's only availible.. wait.. nevermind. I keep forgetting about the anime. Still Gantz isn't quite as popular as the more tame series with a wider audience. Before the anime came out and ADV hyped it, I think the manga had more of a cultish fandom. I would compare it back then to Berserk, which still seems to be just under the radar.
I still have yet to check out the anime fully, but I got a good deal into the manga before stopping.
Also, Deathnote has the possibility of being a big overhyped series thanks to the anime. Then again, I think the manga has been hyped a good deal. Then again, count me as a person who overhypes it. I got at least two friends hooked on it too.

Pokemon. It's not particularly good in any way.
Okay, Team Rocket has its moments. That still doesn't justify the franchise's ludicrous success.
to make this quick and painless i'll say that every anime that was interesting or popular enough to be dubbed in english and brought to the states is over hyped.
Rogue and Bishop's daughter would be called Discharge, and she'd touch people and drain all or some of their bioelectrical energy out of them causing them to either die or fall unconscious. She could then use this energy to extend her own life, heal herself, enhance her physical abilities (speed, strength, stamina,) or discharge it as various energy beams.
That is very... elitistic, don't you think?Originally Posted by Kage Kisaragi

Our dilemma is that we hate change and love it at the same time; what we really want is for things to remain the same but get better.

No seriously think about it, once something is made common to a wider audience there are bound to be people who feel that its just the best anything they've ever seen. In fact remember Tom that host of Toonami, when he used to talk about DBZ he would say something close to "One the of greatest action cartoons ever, Dragon Ball Z." We had people who never even saw dragon ball z before it came to cartoon network swearing it was the most amazing thing they've ever seen.Originally Posted by OverMaster
every anime that has done well here has been pretty muched over hyped. Think about rumble matches done on the other boards, people are so obessed with mostly anime that has been dubbed. Now sure alot of people will say, "Well I read the manga from X to X." and thats nice and dandy if you stumbled across it before ever seeing it on american television. My point is once it gets to us our networks go out of there way to make these import seem extremely cool, in that sense they overhype it so that we buy into it that much more easier.
Me, I havent bought any new black market anime (things that havent been aired in the US.) since either Bakuretsu Hunter or Houshin Engi? and that was way back in 97 or 98. Mostly because anime was very much on the raise in america and I couldn't walk down the street without hearing some kid talk about Dragon Ball Z, so my beef is that the networks didnt take chances and show relatively new anime they were showing anime that was already dated and that had been popular years prior in Japan.

Evangelion is the most overhyped by far. It was literally called a phenomenon in Japan and the states. Instead, I would call it 26 episodes of phenomenally low self-esteem from the bastard child of an asshole.
Well, that's a pretty damned good percentage of anime. Pretty much it's a matter of time before any new series gets picked up. Even some old ones. So unless it's some really obscure show that caters to a specific Japanese niche/fetich/otakudom, then it's going to get to America and be put in English.Originally Posted by Kage Kisaragi

I am amazed looking at the calendar at AniDB to see what series come out each month in Japan. Now a number to fall through the cracks, but I think a majority get picked up, especially if you compare it to five or ten years ago.
Ok, here's the quick way to end the thread.
Anime is overrated. Period.
There we go. Thousands of birds. One stone.
