PS3, how exactly is this getting us closer to the PS9?

You guys remember this commercial? It advertised the PS2 as being the first step to the ultimate gaming machine the PS9. With only six steps left i had hoped we would be past an overpriced suped-up PS2 by now.

I remember that commercial. Kind of overblown but the PS2 was still worth it. Now we have a possessed baby doll and a self-destructing rubix cube. But the unjust pricetag doesnt give me good vibes.

That commercial's way off. Given the current market life of a console, we'd have the PS9 forty years earlier than what they said.

Two problems.
1: Sony and Microsoft are going in a different direction than the commercial's describing. Both of the big two are going for what's essentially a repackaged PC. If you wanted this to be the next step towards a level like in that commercial, Sony would need to be using a completely different business model aside from that of "upgrade the processor and give it a fancy ad campaign."

As it stands now, Nintendo is closer to the commercial's ideals than Sony is.

2: We don't have that kind of technology yet. Even if we only wanted to be three steps down the path to that, you're insane if you think we've got the level of tech necessary to set up the ground work for that level of immersion. It's also a problem of economic feasibility. We've had devices that can read your brain waves and use it to control actions in-game for years now, but it's not even close to being economically viable enough to make it anything more than a research tool, let alone a prototype for actual market release.

It's just not possible with what we have now. Again, if personal integration into a game experience is what you're looking for, go check out the Wii. They're the closest to the ideal that's going to be on the market for the near future.

As a PC gamer, I'm offended by your comparison :D If anything, the PS3 and X360 are gimped PCs with inferior online capabilities.

The casual, average gamer - the only market MS, Sony, and Nintendo really care about, given that it's the largest by far - isn't going to have a bleeding-edge PC. To them, the PS3 is a good PC.

And I only said "repackaged PC." I didn't say "gaming PC," I didn't say "blazing fast PC," and I didn't say "expensive PC." The average consumer, were they to go out and buy a PC at Best Buy, would get something that's comparable to the PS3.

I gotta take issue with that last part, because I'll be damned if Xbox LIVE isn't the most latency-free gaming experience I've ever had as a gamer, period. Just this last week I was playing WH40K Dark Crusade online and I was thinking "Man...this would be so much smoother over LIVE."

I remember that commercial. Probably one of the biggest "are you kidding me?" moments I've ever seen. I realized it was just hyping the PS2, but I couldn't help but think, "Why are you advertising something that's coming out in 2078? Most of us will be dead or really old by then."

Its just basically saying the ps2 is the start of something much bigger. As in the ps2 is like the first car ford made and now 50+ years later we have all these models that far surpass the original.

Its just a commercial, jesus people. Is it really worth all this debate and discussion about things the commercial in now way implied or are you that hard up to look for a excuse to vent your petty frustrations?

I'm not frustrated, I just thought the commercial was funny when I saw it. I like my PS2, and my only problem with the PS3 is that it's too expensive.

I guess when I think about it the commercial wasn't that special. :o
