Default Am I the only one who does not like Wonder Man?

I mean really....I have read Avenger comics for over 2 decades and I to this day cannot understand why this character keeps getting re-made, put on teams or even given a chance to speak. Now unlike some who just bash and make assumptions without reading the comics or learning about the character they are bashing I have followed this guy. I have TRIED to see some sort of appeal in him....I just don't see it. I have every West Coast Avenger comic and I couldn't stand him then and can't now...I just don't get him...Let me rephrase I GET him in the sense of his origin, powers and personality...What I don't get is his appeal with fans.

To me he has always been incredibly lame. Now that's just my opinion we all have one, but it baffles me cause he has little to no substance as a character. Oh writers have tried to make him interesting with love triangles, power changes and all that.....But to me he is just plain wack...I don't get it...So Wonder Man fans educate me...Im not hating, trolling or really being overly negative...I just don't get the draw. Why do they keep bringing this guy back? There are waaaaaay more interesting characters that could be Avengers why use him? And for those who feel like I do and don't know why he still exists please speak out...Cause everyone I know that likes Avengers LOVE this guy and gives me no real explanation other than he is "cool."

    Nope.

    I've never liked him.

ESPECIALLY when he became a movie star. I'll admit it was a unique angle... but overall I've never been a fan.

And I thought I was alone.

No, I've never really cared for Simon one way or the other. I found cowardly Wonderman dull, and arrogant Wonderman annoying AND dull.

i think he has a crappy backstory. and i don't like his connection to the Vision or Grim Reaper, to be honest. but the powers and look of the character are really cool. and i like that he's a wannabe-movie star. ideally (in my mind), Simon would be like the Rock-with-ionic strength and no wrestling career. i don't like the failed businessman angle or him being an engineer. it just seems pointless to me. i'd rather him just be a confident image conscious celebrity type with an indestructible body.

Simon was at his most interesting, IMO, when he was facing his own mortalitiy during his time with the West Coast Avengers. For instance he was the perfect hero during Avengers: Emperor Doom. But then he got his superiority complex and was just an ass most of the time until he died again.

I for one am glad that he was more or less blackmailed into becoming a SHIELD agent. I could see him and Carol becoming the new "first couple" of superheroes...taking the troubled Reed and Sue's place.

His superiority complex didn't last nearly that long--he got over it in WCA #25. After that Simon's ego took a back seat, and he became a solid team player again.

I would really love to see the Simon/Carol relationship developed further. I think there is a lot of potential there.

He may have lost some of the superiority (which IMO peaked with his attempts to prove himself with Tony) , but then came his own insecurites that let him to not aid in the re-programming of Vision, which didn't help Wanda's sanity. And then when Wanda spurned his romantic advances he was clearly bitter much of the time. And then the effects of the Nega-Bomb made him mentally and physically unstable, until he resigned from the team. By the time he tried to rejoin the Avengers the West Coast branch had disbanded, so he joined Force Works and died on their first mission. Not the most solid of team players if you ask me.

EDIT: Just to clarify, I DO like Wonder Man. I think it's all of these flaws that makes him such a good character.

Believe it or not, he's probably one of my 5 favorite heros ever. I used to like the fact that he would question himself and even come across as being scared sometimes. He died before and was afraid to do so again. Just think, a class 100 hero that was afraid. He just seemed more realistic to me with his emotions and problems. Simon always stepped up to the plate though.

I do not like him. I find him mostly superfluous to Thor teams, and the whole self-doubt thing gets real old real fast.

I've never liked him. I just don't see the appeal. Writers have flirted with some interesting ideas rovolving around Simon, but even the flirting lacked decent execution, and I find myself just disliking him. His current role in Ms. Marvel has been enjoyable, but I think that's because he hasn't had any real focus, and I prefer it that way.

I've always been a fan of Simon.

He's a "marvel" character through and through with his various personal weaknesses contrasting against him being one of the most powerful Avengers.

He's buddy routine with Beast is one of the best relationships to ever come out of an Avengers book.

I enjoyed his relationship with Wanda well enough (though I think it's nothing short of a crime that Simons perspective wasn't developed more following Disassembled considering his relationship with Wanda and her role in his ressurection), and I'm enjoying his relationship with Carol now.

I liked Wonder Man specifically after he was brought back to life the first time around, especially when Michelinie or Shooter was writing him. He was a powerful but inexperienced hero who was plagued by doubts and fear, but managed to overcome those fears every time and keep fighting. But I couldn't stand him when he became a cocky jerk with the West Coast Avengers. A couple of his costumes looked great, but he's had several really bad costumes, too.
