Midnighter #1 *Spoilers*

I'll be damned. Not bad.

-Some thoughts:

-The issue starts off strong, with the Midnighter in his serious mode. Jenny Quantum has little need for parents, having done that decade-jump in some mini-run a while back.

-Nice bit of him wandering the carrier and contemplating his role in life - he is -what he does, a philosophy right out of a Michael Mann movie - he stops by a globe and spins it, opening a carrier door to Afghanistan.

-The action was solid, reminiscent of War in the Sun - Midnighter kicking a sabot into another tank was especially cool.

-Midnighter's taken out in a way similar to Stormwatch: Team Achilles, but not in a way which is glib or smug. Midnighter isn't rolling around on the ground, asking what the fuck is going on; he's still a tough mofo whose powers are out of whack.

-Thought for a second Kev was making an appearance in this issue.

We'll see how it goes, but it's a solid start and more promising than The Boys. I don't doubt The Boys will sell better, but this looks like the better read.

I am new to the character and really enjoyed this issue. It left me wanting more. Can't wait for issue 2. I would check it out. I'm happy I did.

What's the situaton between him and Apollo? I haven't read anything Authority related since the first series ended. I definitely want Brubaker's book, but that's about it.

But, are he and Apollo still a couple?

As far as I can tell, they are.

It's kind of irrelevant at this point, though, since this arc is about showing him in action on his own, without the Authority or any of his usual support structure.

I dug this issue. Sprouse is always great, and Ennis seems to have a good grasp on the character and what makes him tick. And, hey, any comic book that involves Garth Ennis writing about badass people killing Nazis is fine by me.

i think this was the strongest of the wildstorm relaunch... ennis' script was great..can't wait to see how midnighter gets out of this one...is this going to be bimonthly, because sprouse is not the fastest artist around. the only bad part was the deathblow preview( i don't remember wildcats or authority having previews in it) i'm not a d'anda fan..he seems to be in full jim lee mode..

I think they're still a couple, but Ennis is addressing a few things. First of all, Apollo and Midnighter are two very different personalities - definitely a case of opposites attracting. This was much more evident in the Ellis Authority than Millar's. Apollo is a genuinely decent fellow, but he is a bit of an airhead - whom Midnighter loves.

Also, they were Jenny's parents together for several years - and then boom, she's an adult. A total restructuring of responsibilities, no more adoptive father role (although if I were Jenny's first boyfriend aboard the carrier, I'd definitely watch my back).

I don't think they're splitting or anything, but as Ennis noted in his Midnighter preview interview, just because Midnighter's in love with Apollo doesn't mean he wants to be with him every second. I think it's pretty refreshing.

I'm sure there will be some jokes about his single testicle. It would be awesome if Middy travelled back in time and encountered a British special forces team, including a rotter from the east end of London, an American explosives expert, a huge brainless mook, a deafeningly-bad bagpiper....Alright, maybe not.;)

And Midnighter is monthly - next issue due first week of December.

Interesting. Kind of run-of-the-mill for the most part: Midnighter is a badass. He's the best there is at what he does. Ooops, someone circumvented his powers, now he's just a regular guy. Well done, but nothing spectacular or original.

But then there's that last page, which probably gets a second issue out of me. (reminded me of the first issue of Desolation Jones, actually) I know that's exactly the sort of image you want to leave on the final page, but I wish there'd been a bit more meat to the rest of the issue. On the other hand, at least this issue actually explained who the lead character was, unlike Wildcats and Wetworks.

Promising. I'm not completely sold, but I'm intrigued.

Loved it! It was great from the get go and can't wait for issue #2! Its good to see a gay hero who isn't stereotyped, kinda shows that sexuality is only a small part of the jigsaw of what makes a person.

I just read it this morning, and I thought it was excellent. What a last page! Good times all around, Sprouse art was very solid.

I liked it. So far as I know, it's the first-ever book solo book to feature a gay character. I'm not familiar at all with the Authority, but it was a little surprising that it went in the direction of "go-ahead-and-call-me-a-fag-and-I'll-brutally-kill-you". I found that uncomfortably gratifying. I think I finally get why people like Wolverine so much.
