Default The problem with Kirkman's run...

I think I've worked out what it is -

Nothing Original. By the way - spoilers ahead. In no particular order:

    Phoenix? Done - lots.
Earth as an egg for some celestial force? spoilers:
    Earth X, anyone?
    end of spoilers
An enemy distracting Wolverine with a startling revelation? Anyone remember Bendis' run?
Storm using lightning to take out an enemy during a fight featuring her and Wolverine? Wasn't that Vaughn?
Cloning Wolverine? Do I need to say X-23?
Jean Grey goes on a psychic visit to someone lying in a coma in an attempt to wake them? Northstar.
X-Men vs. Academy of Tomorrow, then the Brotherhood? Magnetic North.
    Professor X vs. Phoenix 1 on 1 match? X-Men 3.

    Any opinions?

I think I'm in the minority. I like parts of Kirkman's run. I wish he'd explaing what those goblins are, but overall I find the stories okay. They're certianly better than some other things I read. However, this isn't the purpose of this thread, so I'll comment on the Phoenix portion for now (due to time constraints).

Phoenix has been done. However, its origins had yet to be explored within the Ultimate world. Sure, the Phoenix being contained within Earth/part of Earth has been done before. Maybe that is a little dull. It's not as redundant as some other things, but it is repetitive. I do like the Shi'ar Church concept, though.

Mate, I agree with you. I'm not minding the run so far, but I just preferred the last couple of arcs. And I don't mind Raney's art, but Oliver is awful.

Well i dont know it started off pretty decent in my opinion, but things took a turn for the worse with Magician and he hasnt recovered from that yet, at this point im not even sure if im going to be picking up the rest of this unless the art improves.

Agreed, not fond of space stories when it comes to the X-Men so when I heard that the Shi’ar was just a cult I was thrilled.

Other than that I’m hard pressed to say anything good about his run. Some things I wasn’t really interested in, Phoenix story arc. I was fairly happy with what we got during the Hellfire Club and I was hoping that would be about all we ever hear about the Phoenix force ever again.

There is no need to go into detail about the Magician arc. The majority of us seem to dislike that one for the same reasons.

When Gambit was killed I felt cheated because he’s my favorite character. After considering that Rouge would have Gambit’s powers and personality traits I was looking forward to what stories would come from it. Instead her powers are just gone with no explanation. Such a huge waste.

The hell are you talking about?

An enemy distracting Wolverine with a startling revelation? Anyone remember Bendis' run?
Storm using lightning to take out an enemy during a fight featuring her and Wolverine? Wasn't that Vaughn?
Jean Grey goes on a psychic visit to someone lying in a coma in an attempt to wake them? Northstar.

This is like complaining that we've seen Wolverine stab people before, or Professor X roll around in his wheelchair.

Cloning Wolverine? Do I need to say X-23?
When did anyone clone Ultimate Wolverine?

I have various problems with Kirkman's run, but I disagree with most of what's said here.

My problem isn't with Kirkman's idea's, I think they're pretty solid for the most part. I really can't get into Kirkman's writing style he's employing for this book. It really feels different from his other books. The biggest problem, to me at least, is that it seems the issues are just being "written for the reveal". Most of the issues have idea's scattered around them in no particular order. There doesn't seem to be much focus on anything, except for the cliffhanger reveal. I think that's what gives the book the "boring" tone that most people seem to be picking up.

The annual was the only issue that felt like it had a fluid story in it.

The only idea of Kirkman's that I'm openly oposed to is his idea of Rogue. He killed Rogue. There was so much story depth and potential there, and now she's as good as dead. That alone makes me want to drop the book.

Storm using lightning to take out an enemy during a fight featuring her and Wolverine? Wasn't that Vaughn?
Yeah, you totally lost me on this one.

There's plenty of problems with Kirkman's run, but Storm using lightning isn't one of them.

Well, most of them are in their early teens.

i know that and took that into consideration before complaining about it but millar had them on a serious note, bkv had them on a somewhat serious note, and now kirkman has them as a bunch of kids. it just seems like a huge turnaround from the past few years

The problem with Kirkman's run is lame writing. Simple as that. This book is on Hudlin's level. Yeah, that bad. Kirkman just seems to do everything for shock value only (Cable= Wolverine, the Magician, the Phoenix story, etc), and characterization has been awful. A waste of money and time.

the Ultimate Universe is a big waste of money and time. every Ultimates writer does thing for shock value (oh my gawd, Jarvis is gay!! Colossus is gay!! Black Widow's a traitor!! Hawkeye's family was slaughtered!! Wolverine has a goatee!! Carnage killed Gwen Stacy!! Scorpion's a clone of Peter!! Doom has goat hooves!!).

No, it isn't. The Ultimates are better than the Avengers will ever be, and only Ultimate X-men is not better than it's 616 counterpart at the moment.

It's not THAT bad. Atleast Kirkman had some good ideas in his run.
