Default Essential Guess the Classic Cover

Welcome to the new Guess the Classic Cover. We have had 3 very successful versions of the game already.

We burned through nearly 250 covers pre-meltdown and another 400 covers in just over year during the 2nd Edition, and the most recent 3rd Edition wrapped up with 500 covers.

    That's 1,150 covers in 3 years!

As I have less and less time these days to dedicate to the game, I can't promise that we'll be speeding along at previous rates, but I'll do my best.

The basic rules are as follows:

    1. I will post a portion of a Classic Cover as a clue
    2. If you know the answer - please state the title and issue number
    3. I will post a larger portion after a while (10-15 views)
    4. Partial guesses/answers to help others along are just fine.
    5. I assign points depending on how many clue were provided.
    6. Hints will be given to help move things along (or perhaps frustrate them!)

If you answer a cover with only one clue revealed, you are awarded 400 points. A two-clue answer will get you 300 points and so on.

Please feel free to talk about how you went about solving the cover, if you own a copy, any memories you have of the book etc….

The discussion is what makes this game fun.

Enough of the legalese - let's get started.

Here is the first clue to the first classic cover of this Edition.

HINT - It has a 10 cent cover price.

    Here is the 2nd clue

HINT - It is not a Big Two book

For those just joining us - that means it was not published by Marvel/Timely/Atlas or DC/National

    Left in the early 40s?

That was the heyday of comics publishing. Only an idiot would quit then.

    I dunno.

100 points for Josh S - congrats on solving the first cover of this new round.

I thought I should start it off with a real classic. Don't worry, they won't all be quite this old/obscure.

Amazing Man was co-created by Bill Everett, who roomed with Roy Thomas in the late 60s for a while. Thomas later introduced a character called Amazing Man in All-Star Squadron as a tribute to Bill Everett (DC's Amazing Man's alter ego was Will Everett).

Here is the full cover - new one up soon.

    .
I'm in favor of old/obscure covers. After seeing Josh's answer I went to the GCD and learned alot about this title and publisher. I've read bios of Everett, and had probably seen the Amazing Man credit, but had totally forgotten about it.

In AM 1, there was a character named "Slim" Bradley. Hmmmmmm.......

Weight gainage is one of many nasty outcomes from all those drinks, the odd(ball) fist fights, and hanging out with all those dames(to kill for).

I can't believe I actually got one. I must say I'm pro-obscure as it improves my chances.:)

Well I guess somebody has to claim the first Marvel Masterpiece of the new essential edition of my favorite thread on CBR.

The third clue points to the third issue of the third solo Marvel Super-hero title of the Silver Age of comics. A fine cover featuring some excellent Kirby art that pointed me to Daredevil #3.
