NBC had a pretty good presentation last morning about super heros and super powers. Its up at MSNBC if you want to watch it its under the picture of doped up Magneto from Planet X, who by the way got a good amount of face time on NBC this morning. And, it got me thinking that there really is only a very few Marvel characters that the general public is at all aware of.
Just think about the number of times you have heard the names or seen the pictures of certain Marvel characters on TV shows or the news. I did a test by asking five of my friends if they could tell me who Namor was none of them knew, but all of them knew Magneto, Wolverine, and Spidey. Two out five knew who Galactus was or Mr Fantastic.
What do comic characters get when they reach critical mass with the public? Well, they get mass marketability, I bought a Magneto statue and book all about Magneto written in Italian in a little airport in southern Italy last summer. Almost everyone even as far away as Italy and Hungry when I was there this summer reconized Spidey's mask, Superman's symbol, or Magneto's helmet.
What characters reach popular mass and why is an interesting question. Even though I like the Fantastic Four I don't believe the characters have reached critical mass the same is true of Daredevil. So just having a long running comic series and your own movie isn't enough in my view. What characters do you guys believe have reached critical mass?
