Default Who was the best DC sidekick ever and why?

I thought it might be fun to find out who was the greatest DC sidekick ever and why.
Can't do a pole because there are to darn many. But I'll add them all up once the threads run dry and we'lkl see who the winner is. it probably isn't conclusive but it's there to jog your memory and help people mak their decisions, which won't be easy for everyone. Don't just say who, you have to say why.

    Mine's a bit controversial.

I'm plumming for Jason Todd. I'm going with the Batmobile wheel steeling version, street kid.
I liked this Robin a lot. He was rough and ready and flawed to the hilt but he was brave. My favourite story with him in Was The Cult. In that story Todd rescued Batman from the sewers, where Batman was a broken gibbering mess. Rescued him from a chamber filled with the rotting dead. He then helped motivate Batman back to "normal2 and then retook Gotham with him and was even left behind with a broken leg by batman in the middle of the sewer system whilst mad mongrel nutcase followers of Blackfire poored down on him.

I vote for Dick Grayson, but a strong case could also be made for Wally West who really came into his own as the Flash after Barry Allen died. However, Grayson was the original teen sidekick (IIRC) and the "Robin" persona goes hand-in-hand with Batman.

Time Drake. I'm a little biased considering he's my third-favorite DC character, but that guy was a great sidekick. The way he got the job was even better.

Dick Grayson and Wally West are the high water marks for sidekicks in the DCU. Nobody has reached the heighths of these two sidekicks.

I don't know for sure, but Woozy Winks is pretty high up on that list .

Tough to beat Grayson for the top sidekick slot, but it's nice to see Jason get a little respect. :) Thanks to revisionist history, you'd think he was as bad as Damien.

Hawkgirl, because 1) I'm biased and 2) she and Hawkman were true equals, not a teacher/student, master/apprentice, or father/daughter-type of relationship. Besides, partners that sleep together stay together ;)

I'll back up the Jason Todd nomination. While Dick was the classic side-kick, Jason was a far more compelling foil to Batman. He came from a place similar to that of Bruce, but was on a far darker road. This was obvious from the moment of the post-crisis reset, yet the struggle was in watching Batman try to intervene and redirect him. While this created an immense internal struggle within Bruce, it also gave Jason the perspective and confidence to confront Batman when he felt he was wrong. Oftentimes, Jason was outright wrong. Occasionally, Batman was. Having a sidekick that was constantly willing to challenge his mentor brought on a fascinating team dynamic, as well as new possibilities to bring Bruce's internal conflicts out into the open. Since Jason, no one else has been able to put Batman on the defensive quite as much, or even simply rattle his world in quite the same way.

Then, by your own logic, Hawkgirl wasn't a sidekick. I agree. She was an (almost) equal partner in the Golden and Silver age adventures. It was a regrettable reflection of society's gender bias that the series were entitled "Hawkman" and not "Hawkteam" or something to that effect.

Those are reasons why she wasn't a sidekick.
