    Default Shopping List: 10/18/06

It's that time of the week again!

    DC COMICS
    52 Week #24, $2.50
    - starting to fall behind again.
Birds Of Prey #99, $2.99 - what's going on? Oh yeah, Batgirl.
Catwoman #60, $2.99 - hands down, best DC book since OYL.
Wildcats #1, $2.99 - maybe. I'm concerned about the slipping shipping schedule. Preview art was nice, but I'll probably wait until it is collected.

    IMAGE COMICS
    Savage Dragon #129, $2.99
    - Yay! Erik doesn't have to ship another issue this year and you won't hear me complain one bit. What is this...9~10 issues this year? That's good enough for me. I'm easy to please when it comes to books I've been reading for years.

    MARVEL COMICS
    Ms Marvel #8 CW, $2.99
    - 'Ringo on art issue? Recent addition to reading list.
Union Jack #2 (Of 4), $2.99 - First issue was really good.

    ONI PRESS INC.
    Damned #1, $3.50
    - Interesting concept, I'm going to give it a shot.
    Wasteland #4, $2.99 - good read!

Ooh, coolness! I must have missed that in the PREVIEWS catalog when it first was announced. I look forward to that. (Since Dark Horse just sent me a box of goodness, though, I don't think I'll see it for a few more weeks.)

I'm trying very very hard to cut down on my comics spending again, as much as I have already. So let's see what's going to hurt this week:

    BRAIN SCAN STUDIOS INC
    Civil Wardrobe, $3.50

Might be good, but I won't miss it too much if my retailer didn't order it or if he sold out of it already.

    CINEBOOK
Ducoboo King Of The Dunces TPB, $9.99
Lucky Luke Ghost Town TPB, $9.99

Yeah, there's no way I'll see these on the shelves. But, again, budget issues. That's $20 saved for stuff I never seem to have the time to read.

    DC COMICS
    Authority #1, $2.99
    Checkmate #7, $2.99
    Sandman #1 Special Edition, $0.50
    Wildcats #1, $2.99

As much as I love the HCs and TPBs, I can read single issues of comics much quicker and fit them into my schedule easier, so I'm starting to backslide to the monthlies again for some reason.

Gene Ha's art sells AUTHORITY for me, ditto Jim Lee's on WILDCATS. I might just flip through that SANDMAN book on the stands. I don't want to be tempted to buy the HC, but I am curious to see more of the recoloring.

And CHECKMATE is the greatest, even if I haven't read the last issue yet. I need to reorganize a couple of short boxes of comics. I'm starting to lose track of where the last couple of months' of comics are hiding.

    IMAGE COMICS
    Savage Dragon #129, $2.99

I will never not buy this. Even after they send it to me for free -- and I read it last night -- I'm still supporting the book with my tall Yankee dollars.

    MARVEL COMICS
Sensational Spider-Man Feral Premiere HC, $19.99
Wolverine Origins Vol 1 Born In Blood Premiere HC, $19.99

Remember what I said about budgets? Well, the SPIDER-MAN book was never really a serious concern. ORIGINS was, but I'll throw it on my Amazon list and pick it up with any reward certificate I get there.

Wow, no Marvel monthlies for me this week. Weird.

So, overall, it's a simple week for me. Of course, since work prevented me from making the comics shop last week, I'll be buying two weeks' worth of comics at once, anyway.

Here are some preview pages for OHIKKOSHI, which likely should have made the podcast this week.

Hey, better late and free then NOT free and on time!

WoW. You're going backwards in our little trend here!

I just finished buying Sandman, so I'm not getting roped into buying 8 $100 vols that have the same story. And those 2 WS books you have there will fit into your "new" monthly reading category nicely, if they actually come out monthly...

I've never read 1 issue or Wildcats and lost interest in the Authority when it stopped coming out a few years back.

Jamie - I should probably clarify what I said, because I don't think I stated it right.

I'm cutting back on the comics I buy, but not that much on the ones I read. The funny thing is, I'm not reading all that much less than usual. The reason is simple -- I'm finally training myself to only buy what I'm going to read. I've finally learned that buying something I know I'll want to read somewhere down the road isn't always a smart idea. That time never materializes. I have bookshelves filled with those books that I still haven't read. So I buy what I know I'll read, or what I can get dirt cheap.

I'm buying less trades that way, and it makes it feel like I'm reading more single issues. Does that make any sense? Truthfully, the stuff I've read in the last month has included a lot of TPBs and OGNs - PRIDE OF BAGHDAD, two Scott McCloud texts, NEW AVENGERS Volume 4, EC ARCHIVES, lots of DICK TRACY, and now ULTIMATE STREET FIGHTER HC for next week's column. (What a weird assortment, eh?)

And I've skipped over a few other trades and HCs I've seen at the store lately. I'm being more picky.

It's all about the ratios, I guess.

And I sorta like WILDCATS this week, tho I'm confused by the whole thing, continuity wise. AUTHORITY was a waste of paper. Morrison decompressed that issue more than Daniel Way's typical WOLVERINE story.

I flipped through the recolored SANDMAN #1 on the stands this week. Wow. It's ten times better looking than I remembered. Sam Kieth's art really popped up nicely for me. It made me think -- just for a moment -- that the ABSOLUTE edition might be worth picking up.

Then I remembered that I'd have to time to read a book that I might not like again.

    ::sigh::

I love my Absolute Sandman HC! Love it! I'd sleep with it under my pillow, if it weren't so big. And didn't have sharp corners. And didn't weigh down the edge of the bed. And if I didn't have a wife who is probably shaking her head as she reads this. So there. Love, dammit!

On to business. Like Augie, I've tried to cut back to only what I was reading, but even then I still have trades piling up. *ugh*

52: Week Twenty-Four-I'm actually pondering dropping this. The novelty is wearing off and the arcs I wasn't crazy about are really starting to drag (IMO).
Birds of Prey #99-I don't want to stop reading this in monthly format.
    Checkmate #7-Really loving this.
Fables: 1001 Nights of Snowfall GN-Woot!

Casanova #5-Where has this series been all my adult life?
Tabula Rasa #1-What is this? I don't remember ordering it. No, the irony is not lost.

For the first time in Y-E-A-R-S there is not a single Marvel book for me this week. Wow.

Agnes Quill: An Anthology of Mystery GN
Queen & Country #31-Better late, eh?
Thieves & Kings Presents: Walking Mage vol. 1-Major woot!

    Wait for Trade
    --------------
    Rex Mundi
    100 Bullets
    Authority

Gene Ha artwork aside, if this doesn't make it to trade, I don't think I'll care.
    Batman and the Mad Monk
    Wildcats

Depending on how close this sticks to Version 3.0, I will or won't care if it gets collected.
    Girls
    Noble Causes
    Amazing Spider-Girl
    Cable/Deadpool
    Ultimate Fantastic Four

Carey & Ferry are on the book now, right?
    X-Factor

There's nothing like responding to your own post, eh?

Anyways, I stopped in an Atomic Comics while I was in Phoenix yesterday. They were selling the McFarlane variant cover for $6 and it didn't seem too pricey to me so I picked it up. I'm still leaning towards reading this in a collected form, but thought that even if I do that, I could always dump the variant cover on eBay some day. I'm sure that McFarlane still has his fans, right?

I was completely wrong. 'Ringo starts next issue. I'm still trying to make my way through the Dr. Strange story so it may be a couple of days before I get around to reading this. I did enjoy issue #7!
