Damn, no love for The Roots?!? (although I'd sooner call them a band fronted by a rapper than a rap group, in the traditional sense).

I don't know why there seem to be less "groups" as far as rappers are concerned. I don't think we'll see anything like Wu-Tang in the near future, at least not in the mainstream. Most "groups" nowadays only have that one standout who ultimately has to carry the entire group. And sometimes, those standout dudes ain't even all that good.

I would call them a rap group fronted by a drummer, actually.

Give it a couple years. I'll bet we see some kind of "rap renaissance."

They're pretty much mostly pop, but still, The Black Eyed Peas should count as a rap group.

I don't see a problem in calling the Roots a rap group though. I mean, if Gang Starr is a group (one emcee one deejay) then surely the Roots count.

    1. running with a clique rather than dolo provides more publicity and coverage to both you and you crew.
    2. in this era of quickly forgettable music/disposable hits, t's easier for a solo artist to get on now than for a group

I thought they broke up after Fergie decided to go solo.

Default what's a rap rap renaissance?

    originally quoted by Erebus:

'Give it a couple years. I'll bet we see some kind of "rap renaissance."'

What do you mean by "rap renaissance"? are like all these rappers and tappers expected to make a freakishly huge comeback or something?

cuz' if that happened i would definatly like to be there when it happens!:)

also, here are some rap groups still active:

    clipse
    outkast
    three 6 mafia
    dem franchize boys
    little brother
    people under the stars
    diplomats
    beastie boys
    bep
    the coup
    dilated peoples
    jurassic 5

but generally speaking, you are right. Artists, their record companies, and their crews realize they can gain more exposure as a solo artist collab'ing with someone else than they can by themselves. Hence why you get so many guest appearances on albums nowadays.
