    Default Denny O'Neil at Marvel

I've been reading the results of the Top 50 Artists and Writers (my choices are getting creamed by the way - too many young whippersnappers out there) and I came across the entry for Denny O'Neil (my number one choice). It mentioned he did work at Marvel in the mid-80s which was after I stopped collecting.

    How was his Marvel stuff?

I think Denny O'Neal was an editor at Marvel in the mid-80's. He edited John Byrne's Alpha Flight.

I remember liking his Iron Man run when I was a kid, but that was when every comic character was new to me, and therefore interesting. I've heard IM fans slam his run, but they were of the hardcore Michiline/Layton variety.

I thought his IM run was first rate.

He wrote Daredevil not too long after Frank Miller, as well. Very solid, run, AND collected in trade.

O'Neill's Iron Man run was the first time I followed the title devotedly (I'd occasionally bought issues beginning in 1972), so I second Devil's positive opinion of that tenure. I don't remember much more he wrote at Marvel, except for the Shadow hardcover, "Hitler's Astrologer", that apparently didn't shape up to any of the creators' satisfaction (I've read it, but I have no distinct memories of it; based on that, it didn't come up to the standards of O'Neill's previous Shadow series at DC, even though he was reteamed with Kaluta).

Default ....and now the opposite opinion.

O'Neil's run on IRON MAN made me stop buying the book, and I wasn't just a " hardcore Michelinie/Layton" fan. I had been reading Iron Man since the TALES OF SUSPENSE days.

He was also Miller's editor on Daredevil, and the... re-invioning(?) of the Elektra Saga.

I didn't realize he did any writing at Marvel, though I know he edited a tonne of stuff during his tenure there (mostly - if not exclusively - during the Shooter era).

Thanks for all the feedback. Which artists did he work with on Iron Man and Daredevil?

Ditto, all the way down the line. O'Neil's stories soured me on the title and I've never gone back.

Luke McDonnell was his primary collaborator on Iron Man, although Steve Ditko pencilled his first issue as writer (#160). McDonnell left with #195, and Rich Buckler did a few issues before Mark Bright took over with #200. I think O'Neill was on the book until Michilenie and Layton returned with 215.

It doesn't get talked about much, but I really enjoyed O'Neil's short run on AMAZING SPIDER-MAN. He did a very cool arc with Spidey vs. the Frightful Four. He also wrote two Spidey ANNUALS (#14-15), both with art by Frank Miller.

    Default Denny O'Neil at Marvel

Are you guys kidding, Denny got his START at Marvel! He worked for Marvel BEFORE he worked for DC, back in the sixties-- usually under the name "Denny-O."

A "No-Prize" for anyone who can name one of the books (one of Marvel's most popular back then!) he worked on!

I know he wrote issues of Dr. Strange in the 60's. Is that the one?
