Over the past 5 or 6 years the Ulitmate books have been on the market a number of characters have been introduced. Many, like Spider-Man and Iceman, haven't strayed terribly far from their original incarnations. Some, such as Carnage and Silver Surfer, have had significant changes made to them. Then there are characters like Nick Fury and Colossus. While in many ways they haven't strayed too far from their original versions, they've also had some noticeable changes made. Nick Fury was introduced as a black man and Colossus was revealed to be a homosexual. Both changes brought a bit more diversity to the books, and in the case of Colossus, opened up a good bit of story potential to be explored. My question regarding the changes made to the race or orientaion of characters is this: Would readers accept similar changes had they been made to a minority character? If Falcon had been introduced as a white man or Northstar was a heterosexual would these changes be accepted?
